Show FiltersHide Filters

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

St. Clair County Assessor: Veteran Exemptions

HousingSt. Clair County, IL · County

The St. Clair County Assessor's exemption list still says a 70% or higher rating makes a home fully tax exempt and asks for an honorable discharge; since taxable year 2023 the statute exempts the first $250,000 of equalized assessed value and asks instead for VA disability compensation. The Veterans Assistance Commission files the forms for free.

At least 30% service-connected. The standard exemption starts at a 30% rating and steps up at 50% and 70%. The returning veterans, World War II and specially adapted housing exemptions do not turn on a percentage.

St. Clair County Sheriff's Merit Commission: Veterans Preference

Education & EmploymentSt. Clair County, IL · County

The St. Clair County Code ranks a certified applicant for a Sheriff's deputy post who has honorably served above every other applicant with the same rating. State law adds what the Code does not say: a veteran discharged within the last six months can ask to be examined before the next scheduled test date.

Honorable service, filed with the Commission. The tie-breaker needs a certificate of honorable service on file; the early examination needs a discharge within six months. No rating is needed.

St. Clair County Veterans Court

MiscellaneousSt. Clair County, IL · County

The 20th Judicial Circuit's St. Clair Veterans Court is certified by the Illinois Supreme Court's problem-solving court office and had 21 participants in January 2026, but the circuit publishes no eligibility rules, so the State act's limits are the only published ones. Ask defence counsel or the Veterans Assistance Commission about a referral.

    Illinois County Veterans Assistance Commissions

In a county with two or more veterans organizations, those posts can form a Veterans Assistance Commission that the county must house and fund, which pays "just and necessary" assistance to veterans with an honorable or general discharge and their families, and to families of deceased veterans, from a county levy, the general fund or State money.
