Veteran Readiness and Employment (Chapter 31)

Work support, and sometimes training, when a service-connected disability limits the work a veteran can do. Also called VR&E or Voc Rehab.

Also called: VR&E, Voc Rehab, Chapter 31, vocational rehabilitation.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

Veteran Readiness and Employment helps a veteran prepare for, find, and keep suitable work. VA runs it as five tracks: Reemployment, with a former employer; Rapid Access to Employment, for a job that uses existing skills; Self-Employment; Employment Through Long-Term Services, which can include college or other training; and Independent Living, for a veteran who cannot work now. VA's published basic gate is a service-connected rating of at least 10% and an employment handicap. A serious employment handicap can matter, and VA describes a memorandum-rating path in some of those cases. Discharge rules also apply. A rating filter in VetTOC uses the 10% gate. It is not a decision about the memorandum-rating exception. Read the official eligibility page if that exception might apply.
