Five state veterans homes, at Anna, Chicago, LaSalle, Manteno, and Quincy, offering skilled nursing and memory care. Admission is not based on ability to pay, and the monthly contribution is capped at $1,659.
Also called: veterans home, nursing home, skilled nursing, memory care, Anna, Chicago, LaSalle, Manteno, Quincy, IDVA.
The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs runs five veterans homes, at Anna, Chicago, LaSalle, Manteno, and Quincy. They provide primarily skilled nursing and memory care.
Eligibility has a wartime path and a peacetime path. Any honorably discharged veteran is entitled to admission if they served at least one day during a period VA recognizes as a war period, or served in a hostile fire environment and were awarded a campaign or expeditionary medal. A peacetime veteran with one year of honorable service may also be eligible, subject to other qualifying conditions.
The cost rule is the part worth understanding, and it is unusually favorable. Admission is not based on ability to pay. The maximum monthly contribution is $1,659, calculated from the veteran's and spouse's monthly income and excluding other assets. That is a cap rather than a rate, so a resident with low income pays less, and a resident with substantial savings is not required to spend them down the way a commercial nursing home placement would require.
A widow, widower, or spouse of an honorably discharged veteran who has been an Illinois resident for a continuous year immediately before applying, who has no adequate means of support and cannot earn a living, is entitled to admission at the Anna and Quincy homes specifically, subject to availability. That is narrower than the veteran's own eligibility and is limited to two of the five homes.
The homes are explicit about what they cannot do. They are not equipped to care for a veteran requiring psychiatric or substance abuse care, or ventilation. A family should establish that early rather than after an application is underway.
The Department works with the veteran and family to determine eligibility based on clinical need. Apply through IDVA or the individual home.

Gate
Rule
One day of wartime service, or one year in peacetime
The gates are an honorable discharge with at least one day of service during a recognized war period, or service in a hostile fire environment with a campaign or expeditionary medal, or one year of honorable peacetime service. No disability rating is required for admission, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.
