Where it applies

Vet Centers are small, community-based counseling centers run by VA's Readjustment Counseling Service under 38 U.S.C. 1712A. They provide individual, group, marriage and family counseling, bereavement counseling, and referrals, at no cost and without a disability rating or VA health care enrollment. Eligibility under section 1712A includes a veteran or service member, including Guard and Reserve, who served in a theater of combat operations or an area of hostilities, one who provided direct emergency medical or mental health care, or mortuary services, to the casualties of combat operations even from outside that area, and a Guard member called by a governor in response to a disaster or civil disorder in the state. Family members, including step-family and extended family, can receive counseling related to the veteran's service. VA's Vet Center pages list the further groups VA serves, such as veterans who experienced military sexual trauma. Vet Center records are kept apart from the VA medical record and are not shared without written consent except where law requires. The Vet Center Call Center at 877-927-8387 is open all day.
