Death & Survivor Benefits

Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife)

Guaranteed-acceptance whole life insurance of up to $40,000 for a veteran 80 or younger with any service-connected rating, including 0%, with no health questions.

Also called: VALife, VA life insurance, guaranteed acceptance, S-DVI replacement.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

VALife replaced Service-Disabled Veterans Insurance for new applicants on January 1, 2023. It is whole life insurance with guaranteed acceptance: no medical questions and no health exam. A veteran 80 or younger with a VA service-connected disability rating, even 0%, is eligible at any time. A veteran 81 or older qualifies only if they applied for compensation before turning 81, were rated after 81, and apply within two years of the rating notice. Coverage is up to $40,000, in $10,000 increments, and builds cash value after two years. Full coverage begins two years after the application; if the insured dies in those two years, VA pays back the premiums with interest (4.23% for a death in 2026). Premiums depend on age and coverage and stay level.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
