Death & Survivor Benefits

Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (FSGLI)

Life insurance through the service member for a spouse, up to $100,000 and not more than the member’s SGLI, and $10,000 free for each dependent child.

Also called: FSGLI, spouse life insurance, child life insurance, military spouse insurance.

For: Spouse, child.

Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

FSGLI covers the spouse and dependent children of a member insured under full-time SGLI. Spouse coverage is up to $100,000, in $10,000 steps, and cannot exceed the member's own SGLI. Each dependent child is covered for $10,000 at no cost. The spouse premium depends on the spouse's age; for a spouse under 35, $100,000 costs $4.00 a month. A military spouse who is also a member has SGLI and FSGLI at once. Spouse coverage ends 120 days after the member separates, or after divorce; the spouse can then convert to an individual policy with a commercial insurer without proof of good health.
