Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

VA's adapted housing grants pay to build, buy, remodel or pay down a home so that a veteran with a severe service-connected disability can live in it independently. The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant is for a veteran with the loss, or loss of use, of both legs, both arms, or one leg with one arm or other listed conditions, blindness in both eyes with loss of use of a leg, certain severe burns, ALS, or the loss of use of one leg after September 11, 2001, that makes a brace, crutch, cane or wheelchair necessary. That last path is limited by Congress to 120 grants a fiscal year. The Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant is for a veteran with blindness in both eyes (20/200 or less), the loss or loss of use of both hands, certain severe burns, or certain respiratory or inhalation injuries. Maximum amounts for fiscal year 2026 (October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026) SAH: $126,526 SHA: $25,350 Temporary Residence Adaptation, SAH-eligible: $50,961 Temporary Residence Adaptation, SHA-eligible: $9,100 VA adjusts the maximums each October 1 and had not posted the fiscal year 2027 figures when this entry was read. A grant can be used up to six times over a lifetime, up to the maximum. The TRA grant adapts a family member's home where the veteran lives temporarily. Apply on VA Form 26-4555.

Documents the source lists

What the official source lists for an application, and where to get each document. It is a reference read from the source, not a full list of what the office may ask for; check with the office or an accredited representative before you apply. Needed means the source asks for it; Helps means the source calls it optional or says it speeds things up.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
