St. Clair County Recorder of Deeds: Confidential DD-214s and Free Certified Copies
The St. Clair County Recorder of Deeds gives a certified copy of a recorded DD-214 free and keeps recorded discharges out of public view, releasing full copies only to the veteran, dependents, the county service officer, VA, or someone with the veteran's written authorization.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, discharge, Recorder of Deeds, certified copy, Belleville.
The Recorder of Deeds' copy fee list reads "Certified copy of DD214 = Free", against the original recording fee for most certified copies, and it offers a DD-214 Copy Request Form. Its FAQ says military discharge documents are the only recorded documents not open to public inspection.
Who can get a copy. The Recorder quotes the State rule, Counties Code section 3-5015 as Public Act 93-468 amended it: a recorded discharge or release from active duty, including Guard and reserve papers, is not subject to public inspection, and full copies go only to the person named, that person's dependents, the county veterans service officer, representatives of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, or anyone with written authorization from the veteran or dependents.
The Recorder's pages do not list a fee for recording a DD-214 in the first place; section 3-5015 requires it to be recorded free. Office: 10 Public Square, Belleville ([email protected]). The Veterans Assistance Commission can also help a veteran find a discharge that was never recorded.
