Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI)

Renewable term life insurance of $10,000 to $500,000 after separation, converting SGLI. No health review if the application is in within 240 days.

Also called: VGLI, SGLI conversion, veterans life insurance, VGLI premium holiday.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

VGLI lets a former member keep group life insurance after leaving service, up to the amount of SGLI they had, from $10,000 to $500,000. It is term insurance that can be renewed for life in five-year terms. A former member qualifies within 1 year and 120 days of release from an active-duty period of 31 days or more, of retiring or leaving the Ready Reserve or Guard, of assignment to the Individual Ready Reserve or Inactive National Guard, or of placement on the Temporary Disability Retired List. An application within 240 days needs no proof of good health; after that, the applicant must show good health. Coverage below the maximum can be raised by $25,000 one year after starting VGLI and every five years after, to $500,000, until age 60. VA has announced a premium holiday: no VGLI premiums from November 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, with coverage continuing.

Documents the source lists

What the official source lists for an application, and where to get each document. It is a reference read from the source, not a full list of what the office may ask for; check with the office or an accredited representative before you apply. Needed means the source asks for it; Helps means the source calls it optional or says it speeds things up.
