Veterans' Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI)

Mortgage life insurance of up to $200,000, paid to the lender, for a veteran under 70 who has received a Specially Adapted Housing grant.

Also called: VMLI, mortgage insurance, SAH mortgage.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Applies in states and territories.

VMLI pays off up to $200,000 of the mortgage on an adapted home if the veteran dies. The benefit goes to the lender, not to the family, and equals the amount still owed up to the cap. A veteran qualifies when they have a severe service-connected disability, have received a Specially Adapted Housing grant to adapt a home, hold title to the home, have a mortgage on it, and apply before turning 70. A VA housing agent helps fill out VA Form 29-8636; coverage ends at 70 or when the mortgage is paid off.

Documents the source lists

What the official source lists for an application, and where to get each document. It is a reference read from the source, not a full list of what the office may ask for; check with the office or an accredited representative before you apply. Needed means the source asks for it; Helps means the source calls it optional or says it speeds things up.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
