HUD-VASH Supportive Housing Vouchers
A HUD Housing Choice rental voucher paired with VA case management for a homeless veteran, with housing first and no sobriety or treatment precondition.
Also called: HUD-VASH, housing voucher, Section 8 veteran, homeless veteran housing.
For: Veteran or service member.
Where it applies
Applies in states and territories.
HUD-VASH combines a Housing and Urban Development rental voucher, administered by a local public housing agency, with case management and clinical services from VA. The tenant pays about 30% of income toward rent and the voucher pays the rest.
It is aimed at chronically homeless veterans and others with the greatest need. The program follows housing first: a veteran does not need to be sober or in treatment to get housed. Ask the VA homeless program about discharge questions.
Start with the VA medical center's homeless program or the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838, open all day.
Thresholds
| Gate | Rule |
|---|---|
| Homeless and low income | The veteran must be homeless and meet the public housing agency’s income limit. |
