Choose a level. County is what this county sets or runs itself. State is what Nebraska provides everywhere, including here. Federal is always last.

Show FiltersHide Filters

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Thurston County (Nebraska) Veterans Service Office

MiscellaneousThurston County, NE · County

Thurston County’s part-time Veterans Service Office in the Pender courthouse, under Veterans Services Officer Penny Warren (also Burt County’s officer), helps veterans with VA claims and medical centre eligibility, places bronze grave flag holders, records DD-214s and orders a Presidential Memorial Certificate for every deceased county veteran.

Any Thurston County veteran or dependent. Claims help, grave flag holders and DD-214 registration need no rating; the rating filter never hides this entry.

Thurston County Vet’s Aid Fund

MiscellaneousThurston County, NE · County

Thurston County’s section 80-102 Vet’s Aid fund had $375.37 left after paying $2,000 in 2024-2025, and for 2026-2027 the Board halved the aid budget from $10,000 to $5,000 over the veterans committee’s objection; the county page still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment changed.

Veteran, spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. Section 80-102 as amended in 2024: honorable or general service, a year in Nebraska and six months in Thurston County, and need the committee assesses; the county page’s wartime test no longer applies. No rating is required.

Free help with a VA claim

A county veterans service officer, a town veterans’ agent or a state service office helps you file VA claims for free, most of them through staff VA has accredited. VA does not let anyone charge you for help filing an initial claim.

Every county runs its own veterans relief fund off a dedicated levy, decided locally by the county veterans service committee. A refusal from the state fund is not a refusal from this one.
