Thurston County Vet’s Aid Fund

Thurston County’s section 80-102 Vet’s Aid fund had $375.37 left after paying $2,000 in 2024-2025, and for 2026-2027 the Board halved the aid budget from $10,000 to $5,000 over the veterans committee’s objection; the county page still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment changed.

Also called: Vet's Aid, county veterans aid, CVA, fund 1900, 80-102, emergency aid, wartime era, Pender, Walthill, Winnebago, Macy, Rosalie, Thurston.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

What the page says. The County Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the county office; the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who "served on active duty, received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. A peacetime veteran, or one with a general discharge, should apply anyway. What the fund holds. Fund 1900, Vet's Aid, held $4,692.65 on July 1, 2023, took a $970.00 transfer, paid $3,470.00 of medical and hospital client services in 2023-2024 and $2,000.00 in 2024-2025, and held $375.37 on July 1, 2025. The 2025-2026 budget sets $10,000.00 of aid, balanced by $9,624.63 of miscellaneous revenue, with no levy and no general fund transfer budgeted. The 2026 dispute. On June 15, 2026 the Veterans Service Board's Gene Case, for the officer, told the Board the fund is for veterans' food, shelter, fuel, medical, surgical and funeral needs and asked where its money came from; the chairman answered that the last funding was a general fund transfer years before, and that the county requires documentation for every receipt. On June 29 the chairman reported meeting Ms. Warren and two committee members and said the fund would be "a budget issue to see how we want to move forward and how to handle the claims". At the 2026-2027 budget hearing on September 28, 2026 a supervisor reported that the veterans objected to veterans aid being lowered from $10,000 to $5,000; others answered that the fund had never spent more than about $3,000 a year and could be raised again if it did. How to apply. Through the Veterans Service Office, 402-385-3119 (see that entry). See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
