Show FiltersHide Filters

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Kanawha County Assessor: Homestead Exemption and the veteran lane

HousingKanawha County, WV · County

The Kanawha County Assessor takes homestead applications online from April or at the courthouse, keeps a December 1 statutory deadline it cannot extend, lists honorably discharged 90-100 percent disabled veterans among its qualifiers, and sends deputy assessors to the housebound.

Age 65 or older, or certified permanently and totally disabled. Code 11-6B-3 grants the exemption to an owner sixty-five or older or certified permanently and totally disabled; the assessor accepts a disability letter, a VA award letter included, as the certification.

Kane County Assessment Office: Veteran Exemptions

HousingKane County, IL · County

The Kane County Assessment Office has the 2023 amounts right (up to $250,000 of equalized assessed value at 70%), but still asks that the veteran not be dishonorably discharged, says a renewal form is mailed to every recipient each year, and leaves out the World War II exemption, which never needs renewing.

At least 30% service-connected. The standard exemption starts at a 30% rating and steps up at 50% and 70%. The returning veterans and World War II exemptions do not turn on a percentage.

Kansas Homestead Property Tax Refund

HousingKansas · State

The older refund, open to a disabled veteran rated 50 percent or more and to the surviving spouse of a member who died in the line of duty. Property taxes above $700 are treated as though they were $700.

Service-connected evaluation of 50% or more. A disabled veteran is one of five claimant categories under 79-4502(e)(1); a claimant 55 or older, or the surviving spouse of a member who died in the line of duty, needs no rating. The percentage is a service-connected evaluation under 38 U.S.C. 1101 et seq. or 10 U.S.C. 1201 et seq., which means a chapter 61 disability retirement rating counts as well as a VA rating.

Kansas Property Tax Deferral for Deploying Service Members

HousingKansas · State

A member deploying outside the United States for six months or more may defer the property tax on their principal residence for up to two years, with interest and penalties waived.

Full-time military service, deploying outside the United States. The member must be, or soon be, mobilised or deployed outside the United States solely by reason of military orders.

Kansas Property Tax Freeze for Disabled Veterans

HousingKansas · State

Service-connected evaluation of 50% or more. Section 79-4502(i) sets the gate for both Kansas homestead refund claims. The percentage is a service-connected evaluation under 38 U.S.C. 1101 et seq. or 10 U.S.C. 1201 et seq., which means a chapter 61 disability retirement rating counts as well as a VA rating.

Kauai County Real Property Assessment: the Disabled Veteran Exemptions

HousingKauai County, HI · County

Kauai's Real Property Assessment Office takes the county's veteran property tax routes: a veteran at least 80% disabled from service-connected injuries is exempt from all property tax except the $150 minimum tax (RP Form P-6 with the home exemption claim, P-3, by September 30), and a veteran less than 80% disabled files the same P-6 for a $50,000 exemption, the claim the blind, deaf and totally disabled also use.

80% or more service-connected disabled as VA finds it. The total exemption from all but the $150 minimum tax needs the disability the VA certifies on RP Form P-6; the under-80 route and the blind, deaf and totally disabled take the same form for the $50,000 exemption. The county takes the filing.

Keeping the Michigan Disabled Veteran Exemption: Audits, Rescission and Clawback

HousingMichigan · State

The price of not reapplying each year is a mandatory local audit program, a duty to rescind within 45 days, and an assessor who can deny the current year plus the three before it with interest at 1 percent a month.

Rescind within 45 days of losing eligibility. A rescission form must be filed with the local assessing unit within 45 days after the individual ceases to use and own the property as a homestead or no longer meets the 211.7b qualifications, including a VA rating change.

Kenai Peninsula Borough Assessing: Disabled Veteran Exemption (no borough cap)

HousingKenai Peninsula Borough, AK · County

Inside Homer, Kenai, Seldovia and Seward city tax still runs on value above $150,000. File by February 15; a veteran whose rating is not permanent must send a current VA letter showing 50 percent or more every year by February 15.

50 percent or more service-connected. KPB 5.13.090(C) requires a VA letter showing a disability rating of 50 percent or more, renewed every year before February 15 if the rating is not permanent.

Kenai Peninsula Borough Sales Tax: No Borough Sales Tax on a Disabled Veteran’s Rent

HousingKenai Peninsula Borough, AK · County

Rent a disabled veteran pays for the dwelling that is their permanent home is exempt from Kenai Peninsula Borough sales tax, for a tenant who has lived in the borough at least six months and is an Alaska resident. The tenant signs the borough’s exemption affidavit and the landlord keeps it on file. A widow or widower at least 60 keeps the exemption.

50 percent or more service-connected. KPB 5.18.200(16) uses the borough’s property tax definition of disabled veteran: a disability rated 50 percent or more.

Kenai Peninsula Borough: American Veterans’ Land Sale Credit (60 percent, once)

HousingKenai Peninsula Borough, AK · County

An Alaska resident veteran discharged other than dishonorably, or serving now, can take a credit of 60 percent of the purchase price of one parcel of borough-selected land offered for lottery sale, once in a lifetime. The surviving spouse of a veteran who died of a service-connected condition qualifies too.

Alaska resident veterans and surviving spouses of a service-connected death. The credit turns on service, discharge and residency, not a rating, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.

Kendall County Appraisal District: the Disabled Veteran Exemption Amounts and the Tax Freezes

HousingKendall County, TX · County

Kent County: Disabled Veterans School Property Tax Credit

HousingKent County, DE · County

Kent County’s Levy Court amended its code to establish a value-based tax credit for totally disabled veterans against 100 percent of non-vocational school district property tax on the primary residence, applied for through the Assessment Division at 555 Bay Road, Dover, (302) 744-2401, due April 30.

VA 100% permanent and total (including individual unemployability). The county credit adopts the state test: VA 100% disability compensation for a service-connected, permanent and total disability based on individual unemployability or a 100% rating, plus 3 consecutive years of Delaware domicile.

Kenton County PVA: Disability Exemption ($49,100)

HousingKenton County, KY · County

The Kenton County Property Valuation Administrator takes the homestead exemption on total disability, $49,100 of assessed value for 2025 and 2026, from an owner classified totally disabled by a federal programme such as the VA who received disability payments all year; apply by December 31, 1840 Simon Kenton Way, Covington, 859-392-1750.

Classified totally disabled by a federal programme, including the VA. The applicant must be classified totally disabled for the whole year and receive disability payments under that classification. A VA total rating or individual unemployability counts; a partial rating does not.

Kentucky Homeless Veterans Program

HousingKentucky · State

State grants for immediate needs and rent or utility assistance for veterans who are homeless or at imminent risk, with no rating requirement.

No disability rating required. Eligibility is honorable discharge and being homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. No rating is involved, so the rating filter never hides this entry, and a veteran with no rating at all qualifies.

Kentucky Homestead Exemption for Totally Disabled Veterans

HousingKentucky · State

Kentucky has no veteran-specific property tax exemption. A totally disabled veteran claims the same $49,100 homestead exemption as a 65-year-old, and the only veteran-specific part is being excused from reapplying every year.

Total service-connected disability. Nothing below a total rating qualifies, at any percentage. Kentucky is close to all-or-nothing: apart from the hunting and fishing license and the reduced-fee plate at fifty percent, the benefits worth real money all require a total rating. There is no ladder of partial benefits between forty and one hundred, so crossing to one hundred opens several entries at once and nothing opens before it.

Kentucky Veterans' Personal Loan Program (statute with no visible program)

HousingKentucky · State

KRS 40.650 authorizes $10,000 loans to veterans for a home, business, education, medical or funeral costs, or debt consolidation. No implementing regulation or application could be found.

No implementing regulation or application could be found. KRS 40.650(3)(b)1 defines a qualified applicant as one who has met loan conditions established by an administrative regulation promulgated by the department, and subsection (5) directs the department to promulgate the necessary regulations. No such regulation was located, and the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs does not describe a personal loan program, an application, or a contact on its benefits pages or in its benefits summary. Treat the program as unavailable unless a KDVA benefits field representative says otherwise.

Kerr County veterans and residents 60 or older. AACOG decides eligibility; the space heaters need age 60 (caregivers 55) and no other safe heat source. No rating is needed.

HousingKetchikan Gateway Borough, AK · County

A veteran who wins a retroactive rating can claim the prior years they applied for, and the Assembly can waive late filing for prior years.

50 percent or more service-connected. A service-related disability of 50 percent or more with an effective date before January 1 of the exemption year, shown by a VA letter less than 12 months old.

King County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption

HousingKing County, WA · County

The King County Assessor's exemption page still gives the disabled veteran test as "a service-connected evaluation of at least 80% total disability rating", which runs two routes of RCW 84.36.381 together and keeps a floor the statute cut to 40% for taxes collected in 2027. It also says the applicant must be 62, where the statute says 61.

40% service-connected, from taxes collected in 2027. RCW 84.36.381: a combined evaluation of 40% or more (80% for 2026 collections), or a total disability rating at any percentage; or age 61; plus the income test.

It accepts only a military or dependent ID, or a marriage certificate, as photo identification.

HousingKing George County, VA · County

King George County exempts real estate tax for a permanently and totally disabled owner with household income up to $40,000 and net worth up to $60,000, limits unchanged since 2017. The code accepts a VA certification of disability; the county’s cover letter asks only for two doctors’ affidavits.

Permanent and total disability. The owner is permanently and totally disabled and unable to work, or 65. VA, the Railroad Retirement Board, Social Security under state law, or two doctors can certify it. A VA rating alone is not the test.

King William County Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption

HousingKing William County, VA · County

Age 65 or permanently and totally disabled. The head of household is 65 or older, or determined permanently and totally disabled. A VA rating alone is not the test.

Kings County Assessor: Disabled Veterans' Exemption

HousingKings County, CA · County

The Kings County Assessor's FAQ describes the exemption as up to $150,000 for a veteran "rated 100% disabled, blind, or a paraplegic", the statute's old base figure and a narrower test than the law, which also takes unemployability and the loss of two limbs. File by the deadlines on its calendar; late claims close on December 10.

100% or compensated at 100% for unemployability. The State exemption needs a 100% rating, permanent or not, compensation at 100% for unemployability, blindness in both eyes, or loss of the use of two or more limbs.

Kingston Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

HousingTown of Kingston, MA · Town

Kitsap County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption

HousingKitsap County, WA · County

The Kitsap County Assessor's eligibility page says a veteran needs "a 80 percent service connected disability", leaving out the total-rating route for unemployability that the statute has carried for years, and has not caught up with the 40% floor for taxes collected from 2027. Kitsap's 2027 to 2029 income thresholds are $70,000, $81,000 and $93,000.

40% service-connected, from taxes collected in 2027. RCW 84.36.381: a combined evaluation of 40% or more (80% for 2026 collections), or a total disability rating at any percentage; or age 61; plus the income test.

Knox County Trustee: Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief

HousingKnox County, TN · County

Knox County's Trustee takes applications for the state's disabled veteran property tax relief, worth up to $444 against 2026 county taxes. The county adds no match. The Trustee's page asks for an honorable discharge and a permanent and total rating, which is narrower than the law: only a dishonorable discharge bars relief, and two other routes need no rating.

Permanent and total, as VA determines it. The state relief the Trustee administers. The rating route in 67-5-704(b)(3) asks for service-connected permanent and total disability as determined by VA, which a veteran paid at the total rate through unemployability that VA has found permanent also holds. It is recorded rather than enforced because the paraplegia, blindness and loss-of-limbs route and the prisoner of war route need no rating at all.

Since 2026 a totally disabled veteran deducts the whole home's value, and must file State Form 12662 again by January 15, 2027 to get it on 2027 bills.

A total disability for the 100% deduction; 10% for the credits. The 100% deduction needs a total disability, which a VA pension certificate can also show. The $350 and $250 credits start at 10%. Recorded, not enforced.

It also limits the $5,000 exemption to a service-connected disability, where section 196.24 says by misfortune or in wartime service.

10% for the $5,000 exemption; permanent and total for the full one. The $5,000 exemption starts at 10%. The full homestead exemption needs total and permanent disability. The combat discount needs age 65 and a permanent rating with a combat-related part; the deployment exemption needs no rating.

The Lake County Auditor takes the State's disabled veteran homestead application, but the Veterans Service Commission's pages ask for a permanent and total rating, which the statute does not, and give $50,000 and $58,000 for 2026 where the figure is $59,400. The Auditor's own page says nothing of disabled veterans.

100% service-connected. A total rating of 100% for service-connected disability, or compensation at 100% for individual unemployability.

Lamar County Tax Assessor: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption

HousingLamar County, MS · County

Lamar County's Homestead Exemption Office takes the State's full homestead exemption for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, who must bring the VA summary of benefits letter with the deeds and other papers, between January 2 and April 1 at 144 Shelby Speights Drive, Purvis, weekdays 8 to 5; only the owner, spouse or holder of a power of attorney may apply.

100% service-connected. The county asks a 100% service-connected veteran for the VA summary of benefits letter. Whether a total rating through unemployability counts is unsettled in Mississippi (see the Mississippi entry), so ask the office in writing.
