King George County Real Estate Tax Exemption for Permanent and Total Disability

King George County exempts real estate tax for a permanently and totally disabled owner with household income up to $40,000 and net worth up to $60,000, limits unchanged since 2017. The code accepts a VA certification of disability; the county’s cover letter asks only for two doctors’ affidavits.

Also called: tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Division 3 of Article II of Chapter 14 of the King George County Code exempts real estate and manufactured home tax for an owner who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled and lives in the home. Combined gross income of the owners and relatives living there cannot exceed $40,000, with the first $2,500 of each relative other than a spouse left out, and net worth cannot exceed $60,000, excluding the home and up to five acres. The limits were last set in May 2017. The division sets no percentage table or dollar cap (the section that did, 14-75, was deleted in 2002), and the office's forms do not state the amount, so ask the Commissioner of the Revenue how much relief a qualifying owner receives. Income-bearing property does not qualify. File every year. The code says between January 1 and April 1, but the county's 2026 application and cover letter give March 1 as the deadline. Disability proof. Section 14-71(b) accepts a certification from the Veterans Administration or the Railroad Retirement Board, or two doctors' affidavits; it leaves out the Social Security Administration, which section 58.1-3213(D) of the Code of Virginia also names, and points to a definition in "section 14-58" that is now section 14-68. The county's cover letter tells disabled applicants under 65 to send "a sworn affidavit by (2) medical doctors". A disabled veteran can file the VA certification instead. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
