Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

King George County's Commissioner of the Revenue, at 10459 Courthouse Drive, takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption and the one-vehicle exemption on one packet, revised July 29, 2026, or an online form (540-775-8539). Bring the original VA letter stating a 100% service-connected, permanent, and total disability, the completed application signed by the veteran and any spouse, a utility or cable bill showing the home address, and photo identification for the veteran and spouse. The packet says only a "Veteran's ID/Dependent ID" or a marriage certificate is accepted for that. Section 58.1-3219.6 of the Code of Virginia asks only for an affidavit or written statement and the VA documentation, so a veteran without a military ID should ask what else will do. There is no income test. Acreage. The packet says the county "will exempt from real estate taxation the parcel which is the primary residence of the Veteran and/or the surviving spouse of the Veteran up to ten acres", citing section 58.1-3212. That is more than section 58.1-3219.5(C) requires, which is one acre unless the elderly relief covers more. The vehicle. One passenger car, pickup, or panel truck titled to the veteran, jointly with the spouse, or to the spouse alone, and used primarily by or for the veteran; leased vehicles do not qualify, and the exemption ends at the veteran's death. The office mails a letter each year asking which vehicle to exempt, and picks one itself if the letter is not returned before bills are generated. (The county's web page says the vehicle must be "owned and regularly used by the veteran" or "co-owned with a spouse"; the packet's wording, which includes a car in the spouse's name alone, is the statute's.) Surviving spouses. The packet states the statute correctly: a spouse of a veteran who died on or after January 1, 2011, who has not remarried, and whose primary residence the property is. It asks the veteran to update the office after a change in residence, name, ownership, vehicle, or "percentage of service-connected evaluation"; section 58.1-3219.6 requires refiling only after a move.
