For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The benefit is State law, Idaho Code 63-705A, administered with the State Tax Commission; the Idaho entry on it sets out the rating test and the survivor rule. In Kootenai County the Assessor takes the application. What the county says. "Service-Connected Disabled Veterans Property Tax Benefit - Between January 2nd and April 15th, disabled Veterans having a rating of 100% service-connected disability, may apply for a $1,500 property tax benefit. Veterans who qualify, the property taxes on your primary home and up to one acre would be reduced by $1,500.00. Income is not a factor for qualification. The Veteran must provide a VA letter EACH year, stating the 100% rating and must have this determination prior to January 1st." Where the county and the State differ. The State Tax Commission's page says "If your disability is permanent and total, you don't need to reapply each year"; the county's page says a VA letter is needed "EACH year". A veteran with a permanent and total rating who is asked to reapply should cite the State page and Code section 63-705A(4), but bring the letter anyway to avoid an argument at the counter.
