Lamar County Tax Assessor: Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption
Lamar County's Homestead Exemption Office takes the State's full homestead exemption for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, who must bring the VA summary of benefits letter with the deeds and other papers, between January 2 and April 1 at 144 Shelby Speights Drive, Purvis, weekdays 8 to 5; only the owner, spouse or holder of a power of attorney may apply.
Also called: property tax, homestead, ad valorem, 100 percent, 27-33-67, 27-33-75, April 1, tax assessor, summary of benefits, Purvis, Sumrall, Hattiesburg, Oak Grove, Lumberton.
The exemption is the State's: a veteran with a service-connected total disability, and the unremarried surviving spouse, pay no ad valorem tax on the homestead (Sections 27-33-67 and 27-33-75); see the Mississippi entry. Lamar County's Homestead Exemption page: "To qualify for a homestead exemption, the residence must be owner-occupied as of January 1 when applying for the credit. All applications must be filed between January 2 and April 1 of each year at the Purvis office located at 144 Shelby Speights Dr., Purvis, MS 39475, between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Only the owner, spouse, or holder of power of attorney may apply."
What to bring. "If you are a 100% service-connected disabled American veteran, you must bring your summary of benefits letter from the Veteran's Affairs office." Every applicant also brings all recorded deeds (not the deed of trust), car tag numbers, Social Security numbers and birth dates for the owners and spouse, the purchase price of the home and land (or the cost to build), and a mobile home's registration certificate where there is one.
Keeping it. The exemption also requires an honourable discharge and is lost, retroactively, for failing to file or pay Mississippi income tax or to register vehicles in Mississippi; the Mississippi entry explains these rules and whether a rating through unemployability counts. The county's Veterans Affairs office (601-794-4218) can help get the VA letter.
