Counties

Loading the county list.

Choose a level. State is what this state provides everywhere. A county or city page adds its own level. Federal is always last.

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Donating a Nevada Veteran’s Exemption to the Veterans Homes

MiscellaneousNevada · State

A veteran entitled to either property tax exemption may pay the tax instead and direct the county to credit the money to the gift account for the veterans home in southern or northern Nevada. The renewal form the assessor mails each year carries the designation box.

Anyone entitled to the NRS 361.090 or NRS 361.091 exemption may donate it. NRS 361.0905, subsection 1. The same option applies to the vehicle governmental services tax exemptions through NRS 371.1035.

Nevada Accepts the Federal Disability Determination for Every State Benefit

MiscellaneousNevada · State

One sentence that operates across the whole of Nevada law: for any state or local benefit for a veteran with a service-connected disability, the veteran is deemed disabled to the extent the Federal Government determined, and a VA or Defense Department certificate is sufficient evidence.

It applies to any state or local benefit for a veteran with a service-connected disability. NRS 417.0187 opens with "Notwithstanding any provision of state law to the contrary" and covers any benefit, program or assistance provided by the State or a local government, including to a veteran-owned business.

Nevada Assistance for LGBT Veterans and Discharge Upgrades

MiscellaneousNevada · State

A statutory duty on the Director to conduct outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender veterans and to help them apply for a discharge upgrade or a change in the narrative reason for discharge. The section defines veteran by the service routes of NRS 417.005 without importing its discharge condition, so a veteran with a bad discharge is inside it.

A Nevada resident who meets the service routes of NRS 417.005, subsection 1. NRS 417.121, subsection 2 imports only subsection 1 of NRS 417.005 and not subsection 2, so the requirement of separation under conditions other than dishonorable does not apply to this section.

Nevada Disabled Veteran and Ex-Prisoner of War Plates

MiscellaneousNevada · State

Both plates exempt the vehicle from every parking fee charged by the State or any political subdivision, including meters. The qualifying disability is defined additively: separate ratings that add up to 100 percent count, and any rating at all counts if it includes a permanent walking disability.

A service-connected disability rated at 100 percent. NRS 482.0962, subsection 1, read with NRS 482.377, subsection 1(a), which also requires that the veteran receive compensation from the United States for the disability.

Nevada Disabled Veteran’s Property Tax Exemption

HousingNevada · State

Three tiers by disability percentage, worth $18,200, $27,300 and $36,400 of assessed value for fiscal year 2026-2027. Nevada totals the percentages of separate service-connected disabilities rather than using the VA combined rating, which can put a veteran in a higher tier than their VA letter suggests.

A permanent service-connected disability of at least 60 percent. NRS 361.091, subsection 2. Below 60 percent there is no exemption under this section. Recorded rather than enforced because Nevada totals the percentages of separate disabilities under subsection 7, so a VA combined rating below 60 may still reach the tier.

Nevada Fee Waiver for a Purple Heart Recipient and Their Child

Education & EmploymentNevada · State

A full waiver of registration, laboratory and other mandatory fees at the Nevada System of Higher Education for a Purple Heart recipient, and for the recipient’s child who graduated from a Nevada high school. It is last-dollar: federal educational benefits are credited first.

The Purple Heart alone, with no residency or discharge test for the veteran. NRS 396.5443, subsection 1(a) reaches a veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States who has been awarded the Purple Heart. No Nevada residency, discharge characterisation, minimum service or disability appears in that paragraph.

Nevada Fee Waivers for the National Guard and for POW and MIA Families

Education & EmploymentNevada · State

A discretionary waiver of registration and laboratory fees for an active Nevada Guard member including a recruit, assignable to a spouse or child on reenlistment. A separate waiver covers the spouse or child of a prisoner of war or a service member missing in action, and deems them a Nevada resident for fee purposes.

An active Nevada National Guard member, including a recruit, full-time or part-time. NRS 396.544, subsection 1. The waiver is discretionary, and the section provides for reimbursement if a recruit who received it fails to enter the Guard.

Nevada Graduate Degree Fee Waiver for a Veteran

Education & EmploymentNevada · State

At least half of registration and other fees waived for a Nevada resident veteran who has a bachelor’s degree and enrols in a graduate programme in a field the State has designated a critical need occupation. The veteran or a third party must cover the rest.

A bona fide Nevada resident veteran with a completed bachelor’s degree. NRS 396.5446, subsection 1 and paragraph (a). Residency is required here, unlike the veteran’s own claim under the Purple Heart waiver in NRS 396.5443.

Nevada Hunting and Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans

MiscellaneousNevada · State

A resident with a 50 percent or greater service-connected disability buys the annual specialty combination hunting and fishing license for $15, against $40 for a resident fishing license alone. It is a reduced fee, not a free license, and the discount is the same one seniors and severely disabled residents get.

A service-connected disability considered 50 percent or more by VA. NRS 502.072. The threshold is lower than the 60 percent floor for the Nevada property tax exemption. Recorded rather than enforced because the severe physical disability route in NRS 502.240, subsection 4(b) reaches the same $15 licence without any rating.

Nevada Income Tax on Military Pay and Retirement

MiscellaneousNevada · State

The Nevada Constitution forbids an income tax on the wages or personal income of natural persons, so there is no state tax on military pay, retired pay, Survivor Benefit Plan annuities or anything else, and no return to file.

No status test, because there is no personal income tax to be exempt from. Article 10, section 1 of the Nevada Constitution: "No income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons." Changing that requires a constitutional amendment.

Nevada State Veterans Cemeteries

Death & Survivor BenefitsNevada · State

Nevada admits veterans its federal counterpart would not: a Guard or reserve member who meets the state definition, or a veteran who received a commemorative plaque or urn, is eligible even without federal national cemetery eligibility. Burial is free only for the federally eligible veteran, and a plot cannot be reserved in advance.

Federal national cemetery eligibility under 38 U.S.C. 2402. NRS 417.210, subsection 1(a). This is the route that carries the guarantee of no charge for the plot or the interment.

Nevada Vehicle Governmental Services Tax Exemption for Veterans

MiscellaneousNevada · State

The same dollar tiers as the property tax exemptions, applied to the governmental services tax on vehicles, and a veteran may transfer the exemption to a current spouse and revoke the transfer at any time. The wartime list here includes a 1961 to 1975 route the property tax section leaves out.

For the disabled veteran tiers, at least 60 percent. NRS 371.104, subsection 1 sets the first $20,000 of determined valuation at 100 percent, $15,000 at 80 to 99 percent and $10,000 at 60 to 79 percent. The general exemption in NRS 371.103 needs no disability at all.

Nevada Veteran Designation on a Driver’s License

MiscellaneousNevada · State

The DMV must ask every applicant for an initial or renewed licence whether they wish to declare veteran status, and with the applicant’s written release passes the information to the Department of Veterans Services. It is an outreach mechanism built into a transaction every veteran already completes.

The DMV must ask at every initial application and every renewal. NRS 483.292, subsection 1. The inquiry duty attaches to initial issuance of an instruction permit or driver’s licence under NRS 483.290 or 483.291 and to every renewal. NRS 483.852 does the same for identification cards.

Nevada Veteran Preference in State Employment

Education & EmploymentNevada · State

The strongest interview mandate in this catalog. An appointing authority must interview every qualified veteran with a service-connected disability, and must give veterans without a service-connected disability at least 22 percent of the interviews for the position, rounded up.

Every qualified applicant who is a veteran with a service-connected disability gets an interview. NRS 284.265, subsection 2(a). The obligation is to interview each such veteran, not one of them, and it is uncapped.

Nevada Veterans Homes

Health careNevada · State

Homes in southern and northern Nevada whose room rates are not in statute: the Director recommends a schedule each April and the State Board of Examiners sets it, and is not bound by the recommendation. Each home has a licensed nursing facility administrator, and gift accounts fed by donated tax exemptions sit alongside the operating account.

Admission criteria are in departmental rules and policies, not in the statute. NRS 417.147, subsection 1(b) directs the Director to establish and implement rules, policies and procedures for management, maintenance and operation. The section states no service, discharge, disability or residency test for admission.

Nevada Veterans Treatment Court Programs

MiscellaneousNevada · State

A district, justice or municipal court may run a treatment programme for a veteran or service member whose service-related mental illness, substance use disorder, PTSD, TBI or military sexual trauma is diagnosed. Only a dishonorable discharge bars it, and even that can be overcome. Completion means discharge and dismissal, a set-aside conviction, and sealed records.

Veteran or service member with a diagnosed service-related condition. The defendant must be a veteran or member of the military with a qualifying diagnosis related to service. Only a dishonorable discharge is a bar, and it can be overcome. No rating is needed.

Nevada Veterans’ Property Tax Exemption

HousingNevada · State

An exemption of $3,640 of assessed value for fiscal year 2026-2027, indexed annually from a statutory $2,000. The wartime date list ends in 1996, so a post-9/11 veteran qualifies through the campaign medal route instead, which has no minimum days of service.

90 continuous days of active duty inside one of ten date ranges ending in 1996. NRS 361.090, subsection 1(a). The last listed period ends December 20, 1996, so there is no Afghanistan or Iraq period and a wholly post-9/11 veteran cannot qualify on this route.

Who Counts as a Veteran in Nevada

MiscellaneousNevada · State

The title-wide definition in NRS 417.005 requires Nevada residency, a discharge other than dishonorable, and either assignment to active duty or six continuous years in the Guard or reserves. The property tax and vehicle tax exemptions ignore it entirely and run their own wartime and discharge tests.

For the veterans title: Nevada residency, other than dishonorable, and active duty or six years. NRS 417.005. Route (a) requires assignment to active duty with no minimum days; route (b) requires six continuous years of assigned Guard or reserve duty with no active duty; route (c) covers PHS and NOAA commissioned officers on active duty in defense of the United States.
