Charleston County

Street address

Start typing a street address. VetTOC reads only the county or town from it and opens its page.

Choose a level. County is what this county sets or runs itself. State is what South Carolina provides everywhere, including here. Federal is always last.

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Charleston County's Veterans Affairs Office, directed by David J. LeBlanc, Sr., helps veterans and dependents apply for federal, State and county benefits in the Lonnie Hamilton, III Public Services Building on Bridge View Drive, weekdays 8 to 4, at (843) 974-6360; it also records DD-214s and describes the State's disabled veteran house and vehicle exemptions.

Charleston County veterans and dependents. The office assists residents who served in the armed forces and their beneficiaries with claims help. No rating is required, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.

Ninth Judicial Circuit Veterans Treatment Court (Charleston and Berkeley Counties)

MiscellaneousCharleston County, SC · County

The Ninth Judicial Circuit's Veterans Treatment Court offers justice-involved veterans with substance use disorders or mental health diagnoses an alternative to prosecution in Charleston and Berkeley Counties: a guilty plea with deferral, six months minimum in the Magistrate track and fifteen in General Sessions, with charges dismissed on completion.

Justice-involved veteran. The court is for a veteran eligible for VA services with a pending case who enters a plea and volunteers. A disability rating is not the test.

Free help with a VA claim

A county veterans service officer, a town veterans’ agent or a state service office helps you file VA claims for free, most of them through staff VA has accredited. VA does not let anyone charge you for help filing an initial claim.

South Carolina County Veterans’ Affairs Officers

Every county has a veterans’ affairs officer who must be accredited within a year and take refresher training annually. The officer is appointed by the state secretary on the recommendation of the county legislative delegation. Section 25-11-40 lets the secretary remove an officer for cause, and a 2025 section says the secretary may not remove one for any reason; the two have not been reconciled.
