Choose a level. County is what this county sets or runs itself. State is what South Carolina provides everywhere, including here. Federal is always last.

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Aiken County: Disabled Veteran Home Exemption (as the county describes it)

HousingAiken County, SC · County

Aiken County's tax FAQ describes the State's exemption for a veteran totally disabled from a service-connected cause, or the surviving spouse, as covering "a house and one acre of land"; the statute reaches the home and up to five acres classified as the legal residence, so ask the Auditor to apply the full acreage.

Totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected cause. The State exemption needs a total and permanent service-connected disability, which the county veterans affairs officer certifies. The rating filter leaves the test to the State entry.

South Carolina County Veterans’ Affairs Officers

Every county has a veterans’ affairs officer who must be accredited within a year and take refresher training annually. The officer is appointed by the state secretary on the recommendation of the county legislative delegation. Section 25-11-40 lets the secretary remove an officer for cause, and a 2025 section says the secretary may not remove one for any reason; the two have not been reconciled.
