Loading the county list.

Choose a level. State is what this state provides everywhere. A county or city page adds its own level. Federal is always last.

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Alaska Disabled Veteran Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Card

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A free permanent card to hunt, sport fish and trap for a resident rated 50 percent or more, with king salmon and waterfowl stamps included. It voids the moment the holder stops being an Alaska resident.

Rated fifty percent or more. AS 16.05.341 asks for certification at fifty percent or more disability from military service. The rating may come from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or from the branch of service in which the person served, so a chapter 61 disability retirement rating counts.

Alaska Disabled Veteran Property Tax Exemption

HousingAlaska · State

The first $150,000 of assessed value is exempt for a veteran rated 50 percent or more. Every municipality that levies a property tax must grant it, the state is required to reimburse them, and it has not done so since 1997.

Rated fifty percent or more. AS 29.45.030(e) asks for a disability rated as fifty percent or more. The rating may come from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or from the branch of service in which the person served, so a chapter 61 disability retirement rating counts.

Alaska Disabled Veteran and Military License Plates

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A disabled veteran plate at 50 percent, plus Purple Heart, veteran and Gold Star Family plates. The wheelchair logo is a separate application on a separate medical test.

Rated fifty percent or more. The disabled veteran plate requires a service-connected rating of fifty percent or more. The rating may come from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or from the branch of service in which the person served, so a chapter 61 disability retirement rating counts.

Alaska Has No State Income Tax and No State Sales Tax

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

Alaska levies neither, so military retired pay, VA compensation and SBP have no Alaska answer. What the state does have is local sales taxes and a Permanent Fund Dividend that pays residents rather than charging them.

No rating, no service test, nothing to claim. There is no individual income tax or statewide sales tax to be exempted from, so no eligibility condition attaches. This entry exists to answer the search rather than to gate anything.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation Veterans Interest Rate Preference

HousingAlaska · State

A one percent interest rate reduction on the first $50,000 of an AHFC mortgage, for a veteran who applies within 25 years of discharge. It stacks with most AHFC loan programs.

Ninety days of active duty other than for training, or five years in the reserves. Eligibility reaches a serving member who completed the initial obligation, a veteran with ninety days or more of active duty discharged other than dishonorably, a former reserve member with five years honorably discharged, and the surviving spouse of an eligible veteran.

Alaska Marine Highway Disability Pass

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

Half off the passenger fare on the state ferry system for a disabled veteran with a service-connected disability, year round and between all Alaska ports. Vehicles, cabins and meals are not included.

A service-connected disability. The published eligibility turns on having a service-connected disability rather than on a particular percentage, which makes this reachable at a lower rating than most Alaska benefits.

Alaska National Guard Coverage on State Active Duty

Health careAlaska · State

Injury, illness, disability or death in the line of duty on Alaska state active duty is covered under the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act, which is the state’s answer to a member being outside the federal system.

Alaska National Guard on state active duty. AS 26.05.260 covers injury, illness, disability or death occurring in the line of duty on state active duty. Federal Title 10 and Title 32 service is covered by the federal schemes instead.

Alaska National Guard Tuition Assistance

Education & EmploymentAlaska · State

Up to full tuition and required fees for a serving Alaska Guard member. The University of Alaska is covered in full when combined with federal tuition assistance; other Alaska institutions are capped at $2,500 a year.

A serving Alaska National Guard member in good standing. Eligibility turns on current membership. A separated veteran is outside the program and no rating or deployment history is required.

Alaska National Guard and Naval Militia Retirement System

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A state pension of $100 a month for each month of satisfactory Alaska Guard or Naval Militia service, on top of any federal reserve retirement. Twenty years total service with at least five in Alaska.

Twenty years of combined service. Counting Alaska Guard service, Guard service in another state, active federal service and reserve service.

Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend While Stationed Outside Alaska

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A service member keeps the dividend while stationed anywhere, and so do an accompanying spouse and dependents. The conditions are a 72-hour visit every two years and, past five years away, 30 cumulative days.

On active duty, or accompanying an eligible member as spouse or dependent. AS 43.23.008(a)(3). The accompanying spouse, minor dependent or disabled dependent qualifies only where the sponsor is themselves eligible for a current year dividend.

Alaska Private Employer Veterans Preference

Education & EmploymentAlaska · State

A private employer may prefer a service member, veteran, spouse or dependent child in hiring. It is permissive, and unusually it reaches currently serving and even furloughed members.

Active, furloughed or honorably discharged. The section reaches a person active in, furloughed from, or honorably discharged from the armed forces, the reserves, the Alaska Territorial Guard or a state military unit. Currently serving members are included.

Alaska Senior and Surviving Spouse Property Tax Exemption

Death & Survivor BenefitsAlaska · State

The same $150,000 exemption reaches a resident 65 or older, and a widow or widower who is at least 60 and whose spouse qualified. The age 60 floor is the trap: a younger surviving spouse loses it.

Sixty-five or older, with no service requirement. AS 29.45.030(e) reaches any resident sixty-five or older. A veteran rated below fifty percent gets the same $150,000 at sixty-five.

Alaska State Employee Military Leave and Reemployment

Education & EmploymentAlaska · State

Sixteen and a half days of paid military leave a year for a Guard or reserve member employed by the state, five more for duty the governor orders, and a statutory right to the former position afterward.

A state employee in the National Guard or a reserve component. AS 39.20.340. The leave covers training duty, field exercises and search and rescue operations under direct military control.

Alaska State Park Camping Pass for Disabled Veterans

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A free camping pass valid at every developed Alaska State Park campground for a veteran with a service-connected disability. It has to be applied for in person, at one of two offices.

A service-connected disability rating. The published eligibility does not state a percentage, so it reaches veterans rated below the fifty percent used elsewhere in the Alaska catalog.

Alaska Territorial Guard Service

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

A Second World War territorial militia, mostly Alaska Native, recognised as active federal service by Congress in 2000. Alaska writes it by name into the land discount, the employment preference, the death gratuity and the WWII diploma.

Service in the Alaska Territorial Guard, 1942 to 1947. Recognised by Congress in 2000 as active federal service, with discharges issued by the Secretary of Defense. Roughly 6,600 people served, most of them Alaska Native.

Alaska Veteran Death Gratuity

Death & Survivor BenefitsAlaska · State

A $750 payment to the surviving spouse of a qualified veteran, or to the estate’s personal representative if there is none. Three separate routes qualify a veteran and one of them is Alaska Territorial Guard service.

Burial in Alaska on or after May 13, 1984, or death on or after September 19, 1990. The two commencement dates operate as alternatives.

Alaska Veterans Preference in State Employment

Education & EmploymentAlaska · State

Five percent of available points for a veteran and ten for a disabled veteran or former prisoner of war. The qualifying service periods leave a fourteen-year gap that closes the preference to most peacetime veterans.

181 days of active service, in one of the listed periods. The periods are April 6, 1917 to December 1, 1919; September 16, 1940 to December 31, 1947; June 27, 1950 to October 14, 1976; August 2, 1990 to January 2, 1992; and September 11, 2001 onward. There is no qualifying period between October 15, 1976 and August 1, 1990.

Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home

Health careAlaska · State

A single 79-bed home at Palmer, shared with the Pioneers Home system. Entry needs one continuous year of Alaska residency and age 60, and the monthly rate runs from about $3,500 to over $16,000 by level of care.

One continuous year of Alaska residency immediately before applying. AS 47.55.010. Shorter than the two-year bar several state homes in this catalog impose.

Alaska Veteran’s Land Discount

HousingAlaska · State

Twenty-five percent off the purchase price of state land, once in a lifetime. Ninety days of active duty or Alaska Territorial Guard service and one year of Alaska residency, with no disability rating anywhere in it.

Ninety days of active duty, or ninety days in the Alaska Territorial Guard. Either route qualifies. The ninety days may be shortened where service ended because of a service-connected disability, and on the active duty route also where the person separated early after overseas deployment.

Alaska World War II Veteran High School Diploma

Education & EmploymentAlaska · State

A high school diploma for a veteran who left school to serve between August 1940 and July 1947, Territorial Guard members included. No Alaska residency is required and a family may apply for a veteran who has died.

Service between August 7, 1940 and July 25, 1947. In the armed forces of the United States, with Alaska Territorial Guard members covered by name.

Free Certified Copies of Public Records for a Veterans’ Benefit Claim

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

When the VA, the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs or the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development needs a copy of a public record to decide a benefit claim, the State, borough or city office that keeps it must give a certified copy free (AS 40.25.121).

A benefit claim before the VA or a State veterans’ program. The copy must be required by the VA, the Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs or the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development to decide eligibility. There is no rating, service period or discharge test in the statute.

Which Alaska Benefit Uses Which Test

MiscellaneousAlaska · State

Alaska has no single definition. Fifty percent runs the three big programs, the employment preference runs on a period list with a fourteen-year hole in it, and several programs run on days of service with no rating at all.

Fifty percent: property tax, the plate, and the recreation card. AS 29.45.030(e), the disabled veteran licence plate and AS 16.05.341 all use fifty percent with no permanence requirement. The property tax section accepts a branch of service rating as well as a VA rating.
