At a 50% permanent service-connected disability, one vehicle is exempt from Colorado’s specific ownership tax and registration fees, worth several hundred dollars a year on a newer car. The statutes do not require the disabled veteran plate, but the plate has an extra medical test.
50% or more service-connected disability. Both exemption statutes require compensation for a 50 percent or more service-connected disability, or loss of use of one or both feet or hands, or permanent vision impairment constituting virtual blindness. The specific ownership tax exemption in 42-3-104(5) also requires the disability to be permanent; the registration fee exemption in 42-3-304(3)(a) has not since HB25-1076 took effect on August 6, 2025. The plate uses the same 50 percent figure without the permanence wording.
A free annual pass to every Colorado state park at a 50% combined rating, or for a Purple Heart recipient. Apply once and renew each year, but only the Denver headquarters office can process the application.

Current mobilization, not a rating. No disability rating is involved, and a veteran no longer serving is outside the program.
A $15,000 subtraction for military retired pay if the retiree is under 55, and the general pension subtraction of $20,000 or $24,000 at 55 and older. The under-55 provision exists because Colorado otherwise gives nothing to a retiree below 55.
Age, not rating, controls. Both subtractions turn on age at the end of the tax year and on receipt of military retired pay. No disability rating is involved, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.

There is no rating or service test for a veteran because a veteran is not the applicant; the route in is a funded organization or a County Veterans Service Officer.

In a treatment program, not a rating. Eligibility requires current membership in the Wounded Warrior or Safe Harbor program, return from a post-September 11, 2001 overseas contingency operation, assignment to a military medical treatment facility at the time of application, and Colorado residency or assignment. No disability rating qualifies a veteran who no longer meets those conditions, and the rating filter cannot test them.

100% service-connected. One path to the exemption is a 100% rating; the county’s section carries the older base amount and the State entries the current indexed one. Statutory awards for loss of limbs or sight are other paths the filter does not test.
