Colorado Veterans Treatment Courts

The chief judge of any Colorado judicial district may set up a treatment programme for veterans and members of the military; the statute sets no eligibility of its own, and each district writes its guidelines with probation, the district attorney and the public defender.

Also called: veterans court, veterans treatment court, veterans trauma court, 13-5-144, problem-solving court.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

C.R.S. 13-5-144 lets the chief judge of a judicial district establish "an appropriate program for the treatment of veterans and members of the military". In doing so the chief judge, with the probation department, the district attorney and the state public defender, "shall establish program guidelines and eligibility criteria". That is the whole statute. It sets no discharge test, no list of offenses and no rating, and it reaches current members as well as veterans. Every rule a veteran meets in a Colorado veterans court is therefore the district's own, and the county entries in this catalog say what each district has published. The statute text here is FindLaw's edition, current as of January 1, 2025; later sessions were not checked for amendments to it.
