Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Colorado statute allows an eligible applicant to add a veteran indicator, a military identifier, or both to a driver license or identification card. The identifier names one branch: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy, or Space Force. Only one may be added to a document. Proof is an original member 4 copy of the DD214, a valid military identification card, or, for the military identifier, a valid common access card. It has to be done in person at a driver license office. Once added, no further documentation is required at renewal. Identifiers from other states do not transfer, so a veteran moving to Colorado with a designation on an out-of-state license has to present the underlying documents again. The designation is worth having for a practical reason beyond recognition. Colorado Parks and Wildlife accepts a Colorado license carrying the military or veteran identifier as proof of service for free state park entry on Veterans Day, which means the DD214 can stay at home. Active duty members who are Colorado residents get an automatic three-year extension of a license expiration date, free of charge, if stationed outside Colorado. The license must not have been expired more than three years. Submit either a letter from the commanding officer stating active duty status and an out-of-state station, or a copy of orders showing it, online or by mail on form DR 2342. Processing normally takes 24 to 48 hours, with 7 to 14 days for in-country mail requests. No retest is required if the holder visits a Colorado office before the extension expires. Spouses and dependents are not eligible for that extension today. Effective January 1, 2027 they will be, which is worth noting for a family currently stationed abroad and planning around expiration dates. An active duty member and spouse who are not Colorado residents are not required to obtain a Colorado license at all, though they may register vehicles here. Colorado also runs Vets-2-Trucks, which waives the commercial driver license skills test for a Colorado resident currently serving, close to discharge, or discharged within the past year, on forms DR 2742 and DR 2172. The written examinations still have to be passed. The Army benefits library adds the underlying federal conditions: at least two years licensed on a comparable military vehicle, no more than one license in the previous two years, and a clean driving record.
