Colonial Heights Vehicle Registration Fee and Exemptions
Colonial Heights charges a vehicle registration fee under section 46.2-752 by weight - $33.00 for 4,000 pounds and under, $50.00 at 12,001 and up, $18.00 for motorcycles and $8.00 for boat trailers - and the display decal was discontinued in 2018.
The City of Colonial Heights assesses a Vehicle Registration Fee "as allowed by Virginia Code § 46.2-752... based on the vehicle’s weight": $33.00 at 4,000 pounds gross weight and under; $38.00 from 4,001 to 6,500; $39.00 from 6,501 to 10,000; $41.00 from 10,001 to 10,499; $43.00 from 10,500 to 11,000; $45.00 from 11,001 to 11,499; $48.00 from 11,500 to 12,000; and $50.00 at 12,001 and up. Boat trailers pay $8.00, other trailers $18.50 (1,501-4,000) or $23.00 (4,001 and up), and motorcycles $18.00. All vehicles must be registered with the city each year, but the display decal was discontinued effective March 2018 - the city's pages give both March 13 and March 14, 2018 as the date Council voted - so no sticker is issued.
The fee reaches the vehicles of a qualifying disabled veteran only when the vehicle does not carry DMV disabled veteran plates: section 46.2-755(B) of the Code of Virginia bars a locality from charging a license fee on a vehicle displaying such plates, and Colonial Heights' fee is a 46.2-752 fee of the kind that bar reaches. A veteran who qualifies for the plates at a lower rating, or who kept a standard plate, should expect the fee and ask the Commissioner's office.
The city's vehicle qualification notice adds relief for active duty military and spouses stationed out of state on a January LES shown each year, and for volunteer fire, EMS, police and rescue squad members on a chief's letter.
