Collier County Veteran Services, in the county's Community and Human Services Division, is the county's veterans service office; see the Florida entry on claims assistance. Its team has, as the county puts it, more than twenty years of combined experience assisting veterans with disability compensation, non-service-connected pensions, appeals, burial, education and health benefits, and its services are free of charge. Its Veteran Services Officers are accredited and certified by the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the office is careful to say it is a county agency and not employees of the VA. Who. The county's brochure lists as eligible: a veteran, a veteran's dependent, a surviving spouse or child, a reservist, a member of the National Guard, an active-duty service member, and a caregiver of a veteran or veteran dependents. What it does. Files claims for service-connected disabilities and non-service-connected pensions, appeals, VA health care and home loans, the Montgomery and post-9/11 GI Bills, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, vocational rehabilitation, burial allowance, headstones and markers, state benefits, life insurance information, homestead exemptions, veterans' preference in employment, replacing military records, review of discharges, one-time reissue of decorations, readjustment counselling, homeless outreach and substance abuse treatment referrals. Its officers also give outreach presentations to veterans' and non-veterans' organisations on request.
