Colonial Heights Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Colonial Heights taxes vehicles at $3.50 per $100 on the JD Power clean loan value, reported to the Commissioner within 30 days of purchase or disposal, and exempts the one vehicle of a qualified disabled veteran.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Colonial Heights car tax, 100% disabled, TDIU.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Colonial Heights applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption through the Commissioner of the Revenue: one motor vehicle owned by the veteran or the spouse, or jointly, and used primarily by or for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent and total, is exempt from the city's personal property tax. The application is the city's single "Veteran Tax Exemption Questionnaire" (recorded from the form itself in the real estate exemption entry): it asks for the "Vehicle Requested to be Exempt", which "Must Be Owned or Co-Owned by the Veteran on January 1st of Current Tax Year", and the office-use block carries the vehicle's year and make, the assessed values and the exemption amounts. Vehicles are reported to the Commissioner within 30 days of purchase or disposal and not later than January 31; a 10% late-filing fee may apply after that. The city taxes vehicles at $3.50 per $100 of assessed value (machinery and tools at $2.00), assessed on the clean loan value in the current-year JD Power official used car guide, with condition and mileage appeals case by case to the Commissioner. Personal property taxes are due June 5 and December 5, with a 10% penalty and 10% annual interest after the due date. Vehicles specially equipped for the handicapped have their own treatment in state law, and the vehicle of a qualified disabled veteran is also free of the city's vehicle registration fee while it carries DMV disabled veteran plates - see the vehicle registration fee entry.
