The Siskiyou County Assessor-Recorder's exemptions page carries the disabled veterans' exemption in its own words - $147,535 of assessed value, or $221,304 where last year's income did not exceed $66,251 (the 2021-2022 caps, CPI-indexed each year) - claimed by application with the county.
Veterans rated 100% disabled or unemployable from a service-connected disability. The exemption needs a 100% service-connected rating or unemployability, with the income test for the higher tier; the unmarried surviving spouse qualifies. The county page carries the 2021-2022 caps; the state entry carries the current figures.
The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors' October 2025 to October 2026 agendas - 28 read whole - carry one veteran item: the April 21, 2026 donation of a surplus 1997 Ford F-350 dump flatbed to the Veterans Assistance Program; the agenda portal publishes no minutes.

Veteran or serving member with a service-connected PTSD, TBI, mental health or MST diagnosis behind the charge. The felony and misdemeanor programmes take veterans with an honourable discharge and current servicemembers, including Guard, reserve and State Guard, whose PTSD, TBI, service-related mental disorder or MST materially ties to the charged conduct. Listed violent, sexual and drug-trafficking charges disqualify. No VA rating is needed.
Smyth County grants the one-vehicle exemption on the office’s personal property application, which may be filed by email, in a county that taxes vehicles at $2.30 per $100 and sets its PPTRA rate at 36 percent.
100% permanent and total. One owned motor vehicle used mainly by or for the veteran, joint title with a spouse allowed. Smyth accepts a disability compensated at the 100% rate for unemployability. One path is a VA rating of 100% that is service-connected, permanent, and total.

Every county has a veterans’ affairs officer who must be accredited within a year and take refresher training annually. The officer is appointed by the state secretary on the recommendation of the county legislative delegation. Section 25-11-40 lets the secretary remove an officer for cause, and a 2025 section says the secretary may not remove one for any reason; the two have not been reconciled.
The office serves veterans generally; the definition in subsection (A) governs the office, not the claimant. Section 25-11-40(A) defines veteran for purposes of that section as a person who served on active duty and was honorably discharged or released due to a service-connected disability. It is a drafting artifact copied from Section 12-6-3720(H)(2) and does not describe who the county office may assist.
Up to three free plates for a veteran considered totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected disability, in four designs including wheelchair and female variants. Free municipal meter parking for these plates rests on an older section that 2026 Act No. 115 repeals from October 6, 2026; after that they carry none, although the valor and Purple Heart plates in Article 149 still do.
Totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected disability. Section 56-3-14940(A). All four designs require the applicant to be considered totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected disability as evidenced by official military documentation, and subsection (C) asks for a letter from VA indicating the disability rating.
A free three-year combination hunting and fishing licence for any resident receiving VA disability benefits, with no rating floor, plus free deer tags. Residency for that licence is 365 days, not the ordinary 30. The half-price all-park passport for a 100 percent disabled resident is administrative pricing, not statute.
Any level of VA disability benefits opens the free licence. Section 50-9-525(A) asks only whether the resident is determined to be disabled and receiving benefits under the Veterans Administration. It sets no rating floor, so a veteran receiving compensation at any percentage qualifies. Recorded rather than enforced because the section names no percentage.
All military retirement income is deductible with no cap and no age condition, from tax year 2022. The trap is that claiming it wipes out the general retirement deduction and the age 65 deduction dollar for dollar, so a retiree with other income can gain less than the headline suggests. A surviving spouse is exempt from that offset.
A qualified military retirement plan, at any age. Section 12-6-1171(A) and (B). The deduction covers all military retirement income included in South Carolina taxable income, with no cap and no age tier, first applying to tax years beginning after 2021.
Guard and reserve drill pay, inactive duty training pay and the customary annual training period are excluded from South Carolina gross income, with the annual training capped at fifteen days for Guard and fourteen days plus travel for reserve members. Active component pay is not excluded, and a member called to active duty may exclude only fifteen days.
Guard or reserve component service, without a rating or a disability. Section 12-6-1120(7) turns on the character of the service, not on any disability. Weekend drills and inactive duty training are excluded without limit.
Grants of $500 on mobilised status, $1,000 to next of kin on a service injury or death, and up to $2,000 on need, from a fund built out of income tax check-off donations. Every route requires a post-9/11 mobilisation of thirty consecutive days, a pay grade no higher than O-3 or W-2, and a family member in DEERS.
A Guard or reserve member mobilised at least thirty consecutive days since September 11, 2001. Sections 25-11-340(A)(2) and 25-11-350(A)(2). Any active duty since September 11, 2001 counts as eligible active duty, but the thirty consecutive days is a hard minimum.
Article 149 sorts military plates into six tiers, and which tier a plate sits in decides whether it is free and whether it parks free at a meter. Valor, distinguished service and Purple Heart, POW and Gold Star plates are free and park free; campaign plates pay the ordinary registration fee, except the Korean War plate.
The award, campaign or component the plate names, on a DD-214, NGB Form 22 or orders. Sections 56-3-14910(C), 56-3-14920(C), 56-3-14930(C), 56-3-14950(C), 56-3-14960(C) and 56-3-14970(C). No rating and no disability is required for any of these tiers.
A clerk of court records a discharge free of charge, certified copies cost no more than fifty cents, and since 2005 a recorded DD-214 is not a public record. A veteran who filed one before that can have it pulled out of the public records on a sworn written request.
An official discharge or certificate of lost discharge from the armed services. Section 30-15-20. The clerk of court records it free of charge, and Section 30-15-40 permits the clerk to inquire into the validity of the discharge and requires an oath from the person seeking registration.
Act No. 211 of 2026 bans compensation for veterans benefits claim work except as federal law permits, bars referral fees, outcome guarantees and upfront or nonrefundable fees, caps any lawful fee at the lesser of five times the monthly increase or $12,500, and makes a violation a misdemeanour and an Unfair Trade Practices claim.
It protects any claimant, with no rating or service test. Section 25-11-810(5) defines claimant to include the veteran, a surviving spouse, dependent children, dependent parents, a fiduciary and a legal representative. The article regulates the consultant, not the claimant, so nothing about the veteran gates it.
South Carolina adopts the federal SCRA as state law, extends it to state active duty, and adds a right to terminate telecom, internet, television, gym and satellite radio contracts on ninety-day relocation orders. The Attorney General can sue, and an intentional violation carries a civil penalty of up to $5,000.
A servicemember engaged in military service, including state active duty. Sections 25-1-4030 and 25-1-4040. For the categories the federal Act does not reach, the remedies apply only once the servicemember gives the person a written or electronic copy of the order to military service.
A free veteran designation on the front of a driver’s licence or identification card. Three document routes, and the National Guard route demands at least twenty years of service. A Veterans Health Identification Card is expressly not accepted.
Honorable, or general under honorable conditions, on a DD Form 214. Section 56-1-140(B)(1). The DD-214 route requires a characterization of service or discharge status of honorable or general under honorable conditions and must establish qualifying military service in the United States armed forces.
Every county must employ, share, or contract for a veterans service officer, tribes may appoint their own, and the state prosecutes federal claims without charge. Department records on a claim are confidential by statute.
Every county must have access to an officer. A county must employ a veterans service officer, join with other counties to employ one, or contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The secretary must approve the employment.
A nonprofit may host a free special pheasant hunt for veterans rated twenty percent or more, or receiving special monthly compensation at rate K, and for Purple Heart recipients. No fee may be charged by anyone, and residency is not required.
Twenty percent, or special monthly compensation at rate K. A veteran adjudicated by VA as twenty percent or more disabled from a service-connected disability, or designated to receive special monthly compensation level K under 38 U.S.C. 1114. A Purple Heart recipient qualifies with no disability finding, so this figure cannot hide the entry.
A veteran records a discharge certificate with the county register of deeds free, and certified copies go free to a listed set of people. A 2026 act rewrote the release rules and carved out the version that hides the character of discharge.
Recording is free to the veteran. A veteran may record a certificate of discharge from armed forces or National Guard service with a county register of deeds without charge.
There is no state individual income tax, so military retired pay, drill pay, VA compensation and a survivor annuity are all untaxed by the state without an exemption, a cap, a residency window or a form.
No claim to make. There is no individual income tax, so the result does not depend on a rating, an age, a number of years served, a residency date or a filing. Nothing here can be lost by failing to claim it.
A resident stationed outside the state hunts small game and fishes with no licence and no fee, a nonresident on active duty can buy a three-day waterfowl licence, and a big game licence lost to a deployment is reissued.
Resident, on active duty, stationed outside South Dakota. The fee and licence exemption for small game hunting and fishing requires a South Dakota resident on active duty stationed outside the state, carrying orders and a military identification card. Active duty for training as a reserve or Guard member does not count.
A lifetime park entrance licence and a fifty percent camping discount for a resident veteran with a total service-connected disability, a K Award, or prisoner of war status. Game, Fish and Parks also takes a Purple Heart, which the statute does not mention.
A total service-connected allotment, a K Award, or POW status. Four routes: a veteran allotment for a total disability deemed a service-connected injury; a VA K Award; having been held as a prisoner of war; or service on active duty, in the reserve or in the National Guard with a VA classification of total disability from a service-connected injury. The prisoner of war route needs no rating at all, so a rating filter cannot decide this entry.
Nineteen plates, from a plain veteran plate to the Medal of Honor, each with its own eligibility rule. A ten dollar issuance fee covers most of them; five carry a registration fee exemption instead.
A South Dakota resident with a South Dakota licence or ID card. Section 32-5-156 requires residence in the state, a valid South Dakota driver licence or nondriver identification card, compliance with registration law, and payment of the fees.
Federal pay rates on state active duty, medical care at state expense and full pay until a medical board clears an injured member, expense reimbursement, and state law extending USERRA and the SCRA to a governor-ordered activation.
Federal rates of pay on state active duty. A Guard member ordered into active service is paid the same compensation at the same rate as a member of like rank and grade of the armed forces of the United States.
Since 2025 a paid claims consultant must sign a written agreement, may not charge an initial or nonrefundable fee, may not guarantee an outcome, and is capped at five times the monthly increase in benefits actually awarded.
It regulates the consultant, not the veteran. The duties run to any person who takes compensation to advise, assist or consult on a veterans’ benefits matter. Nothing is required of the veteran to be protected.
