For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Where the money is. Sherman County's filed 2025-2026 budget names a Veterans' Aid Fund (1900) in its index but gives it no page, no receipts and no spending, and its Veterans' Service Officer budget (0100-803) is empty; its only veterans line is the $24,026.00 "Veteran's Service Contract" in the miscellaneous general budget, the agreement under which Hall County's officer also serves as Sherman County's (see the Hall County office entry, which also serves Sherman County), renewed with a 3% increase for 2026-2027. The county's Veterans Services Office page lists the Hall County office, 131 S Locust, Grand Island, (308) 385-5065 or toll-free (877) 558-0799, and links the Veterans Crisis Line, and prints no aid text. When the office reported on April 22, 2025 it gave $1,462,000.00 of VA compensation, pension and disability payments to Sherman County veterans; what the Hall committee does with the contract dollars a county does not use was the main question at the August 6, 2026 joint meeting. Who qualifies. Section 80-102 lets a county veterans service committee aid a veteran, a spouse, a surviving spouse or a minor child in need; since LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) the veteran need only have served, been discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions) or died in service, and lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county. Sherman County keeps its own Veterans Service Committee, appointed by the Board, but no county money for it to pay; ask the Hall County office about the State's Nebraska Veterans' Aid fund and any county help. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion. The county's recognition. A flag retirement box on the courthouse's lower level, installed with the National Association of Counties and the National Flag Foundation at no cost to the county, takes worn U.S. flags, which members of the Loup City American Legion retire; and the Board declared November 4 to 11, 2025 a time to honor veterans under Operation Green Light (Resolution No. 26-25, October 28, 2025).
