An Indiana resident veteran with any service-connected disability, or a Defense Department disability retirement, can buy a yearly hunting and fishing licence for $2.75 or a ten-year one for $27.50 that still works after moving away. Catastrophically disabled veterans hunt free on four days a year, and residents on military leave hunt and fish without a licence.
Any service-connected disability, or a Defense Department disability retirement. IC 14-22-12-1.5(a)(3). No percentage is set.
Indiana County has run a Veterans Treatment Court since 2019, administered through the Probation Office under Chief Probation Officer Amanda Leonard, funded by Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts discretionary grants, with services for its participants provided through grant-funded partners; eligibility rules are not published.
Justice-involved veteran. Eligibility is set by the court and is not published. No rating is needed.
Indiana County's Commissioners proclaimed Operation Green Light for Veterans for November 2025 and November 2026, and veterans with a DD-214 on file with the county Recorder of Deeds can claim a free green light bulb at the Veterans Affairs office on the courthouse's 2nd floor, while supplies last.
Veterans with a DD-214 recorded in Indiana County. The free bulb needs the DD-214 on file with the Recorder of Deeds; the proclamation grants no further entitlement.
Every Indiana county must employ a veterans service officer, and since July 1, 2026 that officer must hold state accreditation. County recorders record discharges free, keep them out of the public record, and give one certified copy of any record needed for a benefit claim at no charge.
A free plate with accessible parking and free metered parking for a veteran whose service-connected disability affects walking, sight or the hands, or who is rated 50 percent or more with at least 60 percent of it for mobility. Registration fees and excise tax are still owed, and the plate also qualifies the veteran for the $25 state park pass.
50 percent with 60 percent of it for mobility. IC 9-18.5-5-1(a)(5). The loss of use and walking routes in (a)(1) to (a)(4) need no percentage.
Indiana has a Hoosier Veteran plate with a $15 fee that funds the Military Family Relief Fund, free metered parking for Purple Heart, former POW and Medal of Honor plates, and free Gold Star family plates that also open state parks at no charge. The statutes are wider than the Department of Veterans Affairs describes.
All military retired pay and military survivor benefits are deducted from Indiana adjusted gross income, at any age, since the 2022 tax year. The deduction covers the Space Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, National Guard and, from 2025, the Public Health Service and NOAA commissioned corps.
An Indiana resident pays no Indiana income tax on active duty pay from 2024, on reserve and National Guard pay including state active duty from 2023, or on Public Health Service and NOAA corps pay. A nonresident military spouse working in Indiana owes nothing on that pay.
Short-term grants for rent, utilities, food, medical bills, transport, childcare and funeral costs for Indiana resident service members, veterans and their dependents with a genuine hardship and household income under twice the federal poverty guideline. Since July 1, 2026 the rules are in the statute, and first-time applicants come first.
Household income no more than twice the poverty guideline. IC 10-17-12-8.3(d), unless the Commission waives it.
A veteran eligible for the disabled Hoosier veteran plate buys a $25 annual state park pass instead of $50. A former POW or surviving spouse gets a free pass by mail every year, and a Gold Star family member gets free admission. Other veterans pay the ordinary fee.
Eligible for the disabled Hoosier veteran plate. IC 14-19-3-4(a)(3), by reference to IC 9-18.5-5-1. The plate has routes with no percentage.
A disabled veteran who owns no property to which the veteran property tax deduction can be applied may take up to $70 off the vehicle excise tax on each of two vehicles. The route through an unused property tax deduction has all but disappeared now that the main deduction is 100 percent of the home.
A disability of 10 percent or more. IC 6-6-5-5.2(b)(1)(C) and (b)(2)(C). Every veteran route needs at least 10 percent.
A veteran with any discharge other than dishonorable may have a veteran designation on an Indiana driver licence, permit or ID card, and a surviving spouse may have a surviving spouse designation. The answers go to the Department of Veterans Affairs for outreach.
Indiana courts may run veterans' courts that link veterans charged with offences to treatment and services under intensive judicial supervision, and a veterans' court may take a veteran referred from another county.
Marion County's veterans service officers work from the Mayor's Office of Veteran Services in the City-County Building and at community locations, helping with VA and State claims free. Walk-ins Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; appointments by phone or email.
Any veteran or family member. Claims help is free for any veteran or family member. No rating is needed.
The Ingham County Clerk records a DD-214 and gives certified copies free to the veteran, anyone with the veteran's written permission, or an heir. It has sold a $10 veteran ID card in Mason since 2016.
The veteran, a permitted person or an heir. Free copies for the veteran, a person with written permission and an heir. No rating is needed.
Ingham County's Department of Veterans Affairs in Lansing files VA claims free, and its Veterans Affairs Committee administers Soldiers and Sailors Relief for indigent veterans, paid for by a 0.0328 mill county levy. The department also serves Clinton County's veterans under contract. Most of its web pages are empty, so call.
Any veteran or family member; relief follows MCL 35.21. Claims help is free. Relief is for honorably discharged indigent wartime veterans and their indigent families. No rating is needed.
The Ingham County Veterans Treatment Court at the 54-B District Court in East Lansing, set up in 2010 by the county's circuit and district courts, takes cases from across the county. Its page and 2023 manual still use the statute's 2012 definition of a veteran, which the legislature replaced in 2016.
Veteran with a pending Ingham County charge. The statute takes a veteran under MCL 35.61 with 180 days of active duty whose offense is related to service, and bars violent offenders. No rating is needed.
Since January 2020, veterans who hold a Purple Heart, were prisoners of war, or have a service-connected disability, and VA primary family caregivers, can use commissaries and exchanges in Germany, under the same German customs regime as retirees. When the Army announced it, the same access elsewhere in Europe was still pending.
Any service-connected disability, or a Purple Heart or POW status. Any VA service-connected rating qualifies, including 0%. A Purple Heart, former prisoner of war status, or designation as a VA primary family caregiver qualifies on its own, so a rating filter does not remove this entry.
The Ione Memorial District, an Amador County special district, gives qualifying veterans a free Christmas meal each December - a certificate for a pre-packaged bag of groceries from the Ione Plaza Market with all the trimmings of an uncooked turkey dinner, transferable to a recipient of the veteran's choice, limited in number, from 274-4936.
Qualifying veterans the Ione Memorial District serves. Certificates go to veterans; the district names no rating or discharge test, and a certificate is transferable.
A county board of supervisors may appropriate money for food, clothing, shelter, utilities, medical benefits and a funeral for an indigent veteran and their indigent spouse, surviving spouse and minor children. The county commission is responsible for interring a veteran or family member who dies without means, up to a cap the supervisors set, so there is no statewide figure.
Assistance is a county option with no statewide amount. Iowa Code § 35B.14(1) says the board of supervisors "may" appropriate for food, clothing, shelter, utilities, medical benefits and a funeral. A county that appropriates nothing has nothing to pay from, and there is no state backstop.
All 99 counties must run a veteran affairs office in a county building, staffed a minimum number of hours a week by an accredited officer whose services are free by statute, and a county cannot fold the function into another agency. The state pays each county $10,000 a year for it and $3,000 for national training, and withholds the $10,000 from a county that misses its hours.
Free by statute, for veterans, relatives, beneficiaries and dependents. Iowa Code § 35B.6(1)(e): the department and county offices "shall not charge for any service provided to any individual". Paragraph (d)(2) extends assistance to all residents of the state and their relatives, beneficiaries and dependents.
Iowa will accept a VA certification of disability in place of a physician statement for a disability parking permit. A veteran who received a vehicle through the VA automobile grant needs no permit at all, because the free regular plates carry the parking rights, but taking a military special plate instead gives that up.
A VA certification of disability may replace a provider statement. Iowa Code § 321L.2(1): the department "may accept a certification of disability from the United States department of veterans affairs" in lieu of a physician or other provider statement, subject to rules on acceptable form. It is permissive, so confirm before relying on it.
An honorably discharged veteran may have the word VETERAN marked prominently on the face of an Iowa driver’s license. There is no fee for the marking, but a replacement card costs $10. If you prove status with a DD-214 at the counter, the state must tell your county veterans commission, and that commission must then contact you.
Honorably discharged, and holding an Iowa licence. Iowa Code § 321.189(8) requires "an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States". There is no Iowa residency at the time of service, no wartime period and no duration test.
Iowa subtracts all federal active duty pay, all military retirement pay, and all Survivor Benefit Plan annuities from state taxable income, with no age test and no dollar cap, on top of the general retirement income exclusion. Military retirement pay is not even counted toward the threshold for having to file a return.
No age test on the military retirement exclusion. Iowa Code § 422.7(20). Unlike the general retirement income exclusion in § 422.7(19), which needs the taxpayer to be disabled, fifty-five or older, or a qualifying survivor, the military exclusion has no age or disability condition and § 422.7(20)(b) makes it additive to the general one.
A $5 annual fishing or combined hunting and fishing licence for any Iowa resident who served on federal active duty, and a $5 lifetime version for one who was disabled or a prisoner of war, where a nought percent rating counts as disabled. The state veterans department publishes a $7 figure and the wrong eligibility test, and the administrative fee table still shows $59.50 for a licence the legislature cut to $5 in June 2026.
$5 a year for fishing or the combined licence, with no disability needed. Iowa Code § 483A.24(21) and 571 Iowa Administrative Code 15.10(1)(jj) and (kk). Any Iowa resident who served on federal active duty qualifies. The ordinary resident combined licence is $55.50 and the resident annual fishing licence is $21.
Up to $10,000 paid in $2,500 increments so a family can be with a service member injured in the line of duty after September 11, 2001. The rules were rewritten effective September 9, 2026: continuing payments now require treatment somewhere other than your home of record, and any injury sustained on or after January 1, 2027 carries a two-year application deadline.
Active duty service after September 11, 2001. Iowa Code § 35A.14(1). A national guard, reserve or regular component member, discharged under honorable conditions if discharged. A nonresident qualifies only through an Iowa national guard unit under paragraph "b".
Iowa chapter 546B makes it a consumer fraud violation to take compensation for advising or assisting with a veterans benefit matter except as federal law permits, to take a referral fee for sending a veteran to an accredited representative, or to guarantee a benefit level. Anyone advertising a veterans benefits seminar must read out and print a specific disclaimer.
Taking compensation for claim help is unlawful except as Title 38 permits. Iowa Code § 546B.3(1). "Compensation" includes money, property "or anything else of value", including tying the help to a product purchase, and "veterans’ benefit matter" reaches Iowa department benefits and a person who has only expressed an intention to file.
One set of any military plate is free, but the $5 annual special plate fee and the regular annual registration fee still apply, so a military plate costs $5 a year more than a regular one. Only three routes escape the annual registration fee: the Medal of Honor, the ex-prisoner of war plate at a flat $15, and a veteran who received a vehicle through the VA automobile grant.
The plain veteran plate needs only honorable-conditions service. Iowa Code § 321.34(27)(a) requires an owner who "served in the armed forces of the United States and was discharged under honorable conditions". The Department of Transportation additionally requires, for guard and reserve members, 90 days of active duty other than training or 20 years with eligibility for retired pay at 60.
A lottery-funded state trust that pays for fifteen named things, from dental and vision care to vehicle repair, emergency housing and a one-time homelessness prevention payment capped at $1,000. Apply through your county veterans service officer. Traumatic brain injury screening is the one purpose the statute exempts from any income limit.
A closed list of fifteen purposes. Iowa Code § 35A.13(8). The commission cannot add a purpose itself; § 35A.13(10) requires it to recommend additions to the general assembly. Expenditures need a majority vote of the commission membership.

Honorable discharge, one year in Washington, income eligible. The county requires an honorable discharge, a DD-214, one year of continuous Washington residence and Island County residence, and income eligibility. The statute also takes general and VA-accepted other than honorable discharges. No rating is needed.
Isle of Wight County’s code lets the county issue its vehicle license, $33 a year for a car, free to vehicles owned by disabled veterans and by former prisoners of war. Nonresident service members and their spouses are exempt from the fee and the vehicle tax with a current LES.
Disabled veteran, no rating named. Section 11-18 names vehicles owned by disabled veterans and by former prisoners of war. It sets no rating.
Isle of Wight County’s code exempts one car or pickup of a veteran who has lost, or lost the use of, a leg, an arm, or a hand, or is blind, at any rating, as well as of a veteran rated 100% permanent and total. The county’s page asks for a statement that the disability is “100% service-connected”, which the code does not.
100% permanent and total. One route in County Code § 15-22(b): a VA rating of 100% service-connected, permanent, and total. One vehicle is exempt.
Under the U.S.-Italy tax treaty, military retired pay is taxable only by the United States unless the retiree is an Italian national, and the exemption is lost to a retiree admitted to permanent residence in Italy. U.S. Social Security is taxable in Italy, and the United States keeps taxing it too.
No rating requirement. The treaty turns on the kind of payment, citizenship and residence status, not on any disability percentage.
