Ingham County Veterans Treatment Court

The Ingham County Veterans Treatment Court at the 54-B District Court in East Lansing, set up in 2010 by the county's circuit and district courts, takes cases from across the county. Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The 30th Circuit and the 54-A, 54-B and 55th District Courts set up the Ingham County Veterans Treatment Court in March 2010. It sits at the 54-B District Court, 101 Linden Street, East Lansing, under MCL 600.1200 to 600.1212 (see the Michigan entry on veterans treatment courts), and supervises each veteran's probation with treatment and veteran mentors. Who it takes, by its page. A veteran with a pending adult criminal charge in Ingham County, or one in another Michigan jurisdiction without a veterans court who lives in Ingham County; dependent on or abusing drugs or alcohol, or with a mental illness; whose offense is generally related to service; who passes pre-admission screening. Its 2023 manual adds that the prosecutor and the assigned judge approve participation first, and that a violent offender, a veteran with a dishonorable discharge or a substantial risk to public safety is ineligible. An old definition. The page cites "MCL 600.1200(j)" for who is a veteran, and the manual spells out that older text: more than 180 days of active duty with a discharge other than dishonorable, or a discharge because of a service-related disability, or a reservist ordered to active duty in a campaign. That is the definition 2012 PA 335 enacted. 2016 PA 215 moved it to 600.1200(h) and replaced it with a veteran under MCL 35.61 who served at least 180 days of active duty, so the disability and reserve routes in the manual no longer exist in the statute. How to start. The defendant gives the 54-B District Court's chief probation officer a current DD-214, and screening covers the discharge, the criminal record and a clinical assessment; the presiding judge decides admission.
