Benefits written for Thailand are first: U.S. benefits that apply only here, and host-nation provisions that reach U.S. veterans. VA benefits that apply abroad follow.
Under the U.S.-Thailand tax treaty, Thailand may not tax U.S. Social Security, and may not tax military retired pay unless the retiree is a Thai national or has Thai immigrant status. Since 2024 Thailand taxes a resident's other foreign income whenever it is brought into Thailand.
No rating requirement. The treaty and the remittance rule turn on the kind of payment, residence days and immigration status, not on any disability percentage.
Thailand's one-year retirement visa for applicants 50 and over: 800,000 baht in the bank, or 65,000 baht a month of income, or a combination, plus health insurance of at least 3,000,000 baht or US$100,000. Work is prohibited.
Age 50 or older. The applicant must be at least 50 on the day the application is submitted.
VA payment for treatment of a service-connected disability, and some associated conditions, while the veteran is outside the United States.
Service-connected condition. VA pays for a disability it has decided is service-connected, including a 0% rating, and for some associated conditions. There is no single combined-rating floor beyond that.
