Also called: retirement visa, O-A, long stay, Non-Immigrant O-A, Thai visa, residency, 800,000 baht, health insurance, thaievisa.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

There is no Thai visa written for veterans or military retirees; retirees use the ordinary retirement routes. The Non-Immigrant Visa category O-A (long stay) is the one a U.S. applicant can get before leaving, through the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington. The terms below are from the embassy's page as updated September 1, 2026. What it gives. A visa valid for one year that lets the holder stay in Thailand for one year. Employment of any kind is strictly prohibited. The fee is US$200. Who qualifies. An applicant aged 50 or over on the day of applying, not barred from entry under the Immigration Act of 1979, with no criminal record in Thailand or in the country of nationality or residence, a national or resident of the country where the application is made, and free of the diseases listed in Ministerial Regulation No. 14 of 1992 (leprosy, tuberculosis, drug addiction, elephantiasis, third-stage syphilis). Money. A bank deposit of at least 800,000 baht for the last three months, or an original income certificate showing at least 65,000 baht a month, or a deposit plus income totaling at least 800,000 baht a year, with an original bank guarantee letter if a bank statement is used. For upload the embassy asks for three months of statements with an ending balance of at least US$30,000, or proof of at least US$2,500 a month of income. Health insurance. Since October 1, 2021 the applicant must be insured for the whole stay with total coverage of at least 3,000,000 baht or US$100,000 a policy year. A foreign insurer must complete Thailand's Foreign Insurance Certificate form. The page names only insurance policies; VA's Foreign Medical Program covers only service-connected conditions and is not an insurance policy, so do not expect it to satisfy the requirement, and ask the embassy before relying on TRICARE. Applying. Apply online at thaievisa.go.th at least 20 working days before travel, with a passport valid 18 months from travel, a recent photo, proof of current location, an FBI criminal record certificate issued within three months, and a medical certificate on the embassy's form issued within three months. The O-A is a non-immigrant visa. That matters for tax: see the tax entry on why a retiree without Thai immigrant status keeps the treaty exemption for retired pay.
