Benefits written for Spain are first: U.S. benefits that apply only here, and host-nation provisions that reach U.S. veterans. VA benefits that apply abroad follow.

Show FiltersHide Filters

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

No Commissary or Exchange Privileges for Military Retirees in Spain

MiscellaneousSpain · Country

Retired U.S. military members and their dependents have no commissary or exchange privileges in Spain, whether living there or visiting. Only people assigned or on temporary duty in Spain may shop.

Not open to retirees. The Exchange lists retired U.S. military members and dependents as not authorized in Spain, residing or visiting.

Spanish Income Tax on Military Retired Pay and Social Security

MiscellaneousSpain · Country

Under the U.S.-Spain tax treaty, military retired pay is taxable only by the United States unless the retiree is a Spanish national, and the exemption is lost to a retiree with Spanish immigrant status. U.S. Social Security may be taxed by the United States and, for a Spanish resident, by Spain as well.

No rating requirement. The treaty turns on the kind of payment, nationality and immigration status, not on any disability percentage.

VA payment for treatment of a service-connected disability, and some associated conditions, while the veteran is outside the United States.
