No Commissary or Exchange Privileges for Military Retirees in Spain

Retired U.S. military members and their dependents have no commissary or exchange privileges in Spain, whether living there or visiting. Only people assigned or on temporary duty in Spain may shop.

Also called: exchange, commissary, NEX, Rota, Morón, military retiree, SOFA.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

This entry records an absence, because retirees moving to Spain often expect the privileges they had in Germany or Italy. The Exchange's overseas page lists, country by country, who may shop on U.S. installations in Europe under the agreements with each host country. For Spain, retired U.S. military members and dependents are not authorized, whether visiting from the United States or residing in Spain, and active-duty members on leave from another country are not authorized either. Only active-duty members, DoD civilians and their dependents assigned or on temporary duty in Spain may shop. A retiree who works for U.S. forces in Spain as a civilian employee, or who is the dependent of someone assigned there, has privileges through that status, not through retirement.
