Full tuition at the University of Wyoming or any Wyoming community college for eight semesters within eight years, for a veteran who earned an expeditionary or campaign medal. It reaches surviving spouses and children under 22 as well.
Also called: tuition, 19-14-106, eight semesters, University of Wyoming, community college, expeditionary medal, dependents, surviving spouse.
Wyoming Statute 19-14-106 provides free tuition at the University of Wyoming or at any Wyoming community college, for eight semesters to be used within an eight-year period.
The service test is narrower than most state tuition benefits and wider than it first appears. The veteran has to have been a Wyoming resident for at least one year before entering active duty, to have been honorably discharged, and to have been awarded an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or another authorized campaign medal. It is the medal that opens the benefit rather than a period of service, which means a veteran of a small named operation qualifies while one who served the same years without deploying does not.
The benefit extends to a surviving spouse and to children under 22 of a qualifying veteran, which makes it a survivor benefit as well as a veteran one.
It covers tuition. Fees, books, and living expenses are not included, which is the gap the federal GI Bill housing allowance normally fills. A veteran with Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement should generally use that first, since it pays a housing allowance this does not, and hold the state benefit for afterwards. The eight-year window limits how long that can be deferred, so plan the sequence rather than discovering the clock late.
Wyoming is a small system, which works in a student's favor here: the University of Wyoming is the state's only four-year public institution, and the seven community colleges are spread across the state, so the benefit is usable wherever a veteran lives.
Apply through the institution's veterans office, with the DD-214 showing the qualifying medal. The Wyoming Veterans Commission can help confirm whether a particular award qualifies, which is the question that most often needs answering.

An expeditionary or campaign medal, with Wyoming residency before service
The gates are one year of Wyoming residency before entering active duty, an honorable discharge, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal or other authorized campaign medal. No disability rating is involved, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.
A surviving spouse, or a child under 22
A surviving spouse and children under 22 of a qualifying veteran are eligible in their own right.
