For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Ventura County Ordinance Code section 1345-1.4.15 gives "a preferential credit of 5% of the maximum grade possible in any competitive civil service examination to any person or employee taking the examination who is a veteran as defined in Section 18973 of the Government Code". No credit is given in promotional examinations, and the section has no separate credit for a disability. Who is a veteran. Government Code section 18973 was rewritten in 2014 (Stats. 2013, ch. 75) and now takes its definition from section 18540.4: a person who served full time in the armed forces in time of national emergency or state military emergency or during any expedition, and was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. So a general discharge qualifies. Because the credit is five percent of the maximum grade, it is five points on a 100-point examination, whatever the veteran's own score. Claim it on the application and attach the DD-214.
