Northwest Arctic Borough: Veterans’ Preference for Appointment and Employment

In every Northwest Arctic Borough department and on all borough public works, veterans are preferred for appointment and employment. A veteran here is anyone honorably discharged after 181 days or more of active service, or after six years in the Alaska Territorial Guard or Alaska National Guard, or a current Guard member credited with two years.

Also called: hiring preference, veterans preference, public works, Alaska National Guard, Alaska Territorial Guard, NWAB 3.08.080, Kotzebue.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Northwest Arctic Borough Code 3.08.080 provides: "In every department and upon all public works of the borough, veterans shall be preferred for appointment and employment. A person claiming such preference shall be required to show proof of such entitlement." Who counts as a veteran (3.08.080(B)): a person who served 181 days or more of active service in the armed forces of the United States and was honorably discharged; a person who served six years in the Alaska Territorial Guard or the Alaska National Guard and received an honorable discharge; or a person now serving in the Alaska National Guard who has been credited with two years of service. The code sets no points or tie-break formula; the preference sits beside the borough's resident preference on public works projects (chapter 2.64) and its preference for Inupiaq fluency (3.08.090). Bring a DD-214 or Guard service record when applying. The borough levies no property tax, so the State's disabled veteran exemption has nothing to exempt here. Contact: Northwest Arctic Borough, 163 Lagoon Street, Kotzebue, AK 99752; (907) 442-2500, or (800) 478-1110 in Alaska.
