Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Knox County Code 2-768, adopted in 2016 and last amended in November 2022, sets a hiring preference for veterans in county government jobs that the county's Human Resources director manages. The preference. When the county invites candidates to interview for a new hire or a promotion and the list of eligible applicants includes a veteran, the veteran must be invited to interview. And if the veteran's minimum qualifications, skills, abilities, competencies and knowledge are equal to those of another candidate interviewed, the veteran gets the job. It is an interview guarantee and a tie-breaker, not points. Who counts. A veteran is a person honorably discharged from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard, or a member of the reserve or Guard who performed more than 30 days of active federal service. Read literally, a general discharge under honorable conditions does not meet "honorably discharged", and the section sets no disabled veteran increment. How to claim. Submit proof of service and honorable discharge, a DD-214 member 4 copy for instance, with the employment application. Failing to claim the preference or to attach the proof with the application is deemed a waiver for that job. Its reach. It covers classifications managed by the county Human Resources director, not jobs whose classifications another body maintains, such as Knox County Schools; ask whether a given posting is covered. The state's employment preference in 8-30-307, which works the same way for state jobs, is in the Tennessee entry on veterans preference in state employment.
