Indiana Free Peddler and Transient Merchant Licence for Veterans

A veteran with an acceptable discharge gets a free county licence to vend, hawk and peddle goods, and in Marion County municipalities a free transient merchant licence. Local rules still apply.

Also called: IC 25-25-2-1, IC 25-37-1-14, peddler license, hawker, vendor license, transient merchant, county auditor.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

A benefit dating from 1895. IC 25-25-2-1 entitles a veteran with a discharge not on the relief fund list to "a license to vend, hawk, and peddle goods, wares, fruits, and merchandise in any county, city, or town in Indiana without the payment of any fee". Present the discharge papers and proof of identity to the county auditor, who issues a free licence good throughout the county, and no city or town may charge for it. The licence holder must still follow local vending ordinances other than those requiring payment. In a county with a consolidated city, which means Marion County, IC 25-37-1-14 exempts a veteran with an acceptable discharge from the fee for a transient merchant licence issued by a municipality in the county.
