Harford County Government Veteran Examination Credit
Five percent added to a county examination score for an eligible veteran, and 10% for a veteran with a service-connected disability or a Purple Heart, the spouse of a veteran VA finds unemployable, or the unmarried surviving spouse of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability. Military retirees on a pension are excluded.
Also called: county job, hiring preference, veterans preference, classified service, Purple Heart, 38-33.
Harford County Code section 38-33(B) adds credits to county classified service examinations. An eligible veteran has an honorable discharge or a certificate of satisfactory completion of service and served at least 90 days in wartime, or 181 days of continuous active duty in peacetime, unless released earlier for a service-connected disability.
The credit is 5% of the total examination score for an eligible veteran without a service-connected disability, and 10% for one with a service-connected disability of any rating or who was awarded a Purple Heart. The spouse of an eligible veteran whom VA has certified as unemployable because of a service-connected disability, and the unmarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran who died of a service-connected disability, also get 10%. On a test of operating mechanical equipment the applicant has to pass before the credit applies, and the credit only orders a list the applicant already qualifies for.
The section does not apply to a person who is retired from the armed forces and receives a military pension, and a veteran convicted of a felony loses the credit for the veteran and spouse. The Director of Human Resources must also credit valuable military experience on any examination. A county employee who leaves for military service is reinstated after an honorable separation if the employee applies within 90 days and is still qualified.
