Where it applies
Written for the jurisdictions listed here.
- Fairfax County, VACounty
Fairfax County Code and the personnel regulations require appointing authorities, on an initial hire into the county merit service, to consider or prefer an honorably discharged veteran who meets the knowledge, skills, and eligibility requirements of the job. A veteran with a service-connected disability fixed by VA gets additional consideration. The preference does not apply to demotions, promotions, or transfers.
Human Resources says that when scores are equal, the preference goes to the veteran over a person who is not a veteran. When scores are equal between a veteran and a veteran with a disability, the preference goes to the disabled veteran. The applicant marks veteran or disabled-veteran status on the application. Before a merit appointment, the county asks for the DD-214.
This is the county rule. Commonwealth jobs use Code section 2.2-2903 instead. Fairfax also says it is a Virginia Values Veterans certified employer. That certification is an employer designation, not a separate payment to the veteran.

| Gate | Rule |
|---|---|
| Service-connected disability | Any honorably discharged veteran who meets the job requirements gets the initial-hire preference. A service-connected rating adds consideration, and it decides a tie between two veterans. |
