Benefits written for Canada are first: U.S. benefits that apply only here, and host-nation provisions that reach U.S. veterans. VA benefits that apply abroad follow.

A filter hides a benefit only when that benefit has a rating gate and the rating you set misses it. A benefit with no rating gate stays on the list. No disability needed keeps only the benefits a living veteran can use without any service-connected disability rating: one that needs a rating or a disability, or may, stays off, and so does one only a surviving spouse or other family member can use. Who it is for means who can receive the benefit in their own right; a survivor is the family of a veteran or service member who died, and a child of one is listed under both. This is not an eligibility decision.

Canadian Income Tax on VA Compensation, Military Retired Pay and Social Security

MiscellaneousCanada · Country

Under the Canada-U.S. tax treaty, VA disability compensation is exempt from Canadian tax because the United States does not tax it. Military retired pay is taxable in Canada. U.S. Social Security is taxable only in Canada, with 15% of it exempt, even for a U.S. citizen.

No rating requirement. The VA compensation exemption follows from the payment being excluded from U.S. taxable income, which is true at every rating.

VA payment for treatment of a service-connected disability, and some associated conditions, while the veteran is outside the United States.

Service-connected condition. VA pays for a disability it has decided is service-connected, including a 0% rating, and for some associated conditions. There is no single combined-rating floor beyond that.
