Wyoming Veteran and Disabled Veteran License Plates
A free Disabled Veteran plate at a 50% rating, carrying exemption from registration fees. Purple Heart and Gold Star Family plates are free. A general Veteran plate costs $50.
Also called: license plate, disabled veteran plate, Purple Heart, Gold Star Family, registration fee, 50 percent, $50.
Wyoming's veteran plates divide sharply between the ones that cost money and the ones that save it.
The Disabled Veteran plate is free for the first plate to a veteran with a 50 percent or greater service-connected disability rating, and it carries exemption from registration fees. That recurring fee exemption is the substantive benefit; the plate itself is the mechanism.
The Purple Heart plate is free to a recipient.
The Gold Star Family plate is free to the immediate family of a deceased service member.
The general Veteran plate, available to any honorably discharged veteran, costs $50. It is a recognition plate that the veteran pays for rather than a benefit.
The 50 percent threshold for the disabled veteran plate is notably lower than the 100 percent several states require for an equivalent fee exemption, so a Wyoming veteran in the 50 to 90 percent range who has been told elsewhere that fee exemptions start at 100 percent should check here.
A veteran should also remember the property tax exemption in this catalog can be applied against motor vehicle registration fees instead of against the home. A veteran who takes the disabled veteran plate exemption on one vehicle and the property tax exemption against the home is using two separate benefits rather than doubling one.
Apply through the county treasurer, which handles vehicle registration in Wyoming, with the VA rating documentation or proof of the award.
Wyoming's plates carry the county number as the first digit, so a veteran moving between counties will need to re-register, and should confirm the exemption carries across.
