Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Wyoming adds a VETERAN designation to a driver license or identification card at no fee. For an active duty service member, the license expiration is waived on production of an active duty military identification card. That means a service member does not have to renew a Wyoming license while serving, and is not driving on an expired credential during a deployment or an out-of-state assignment. Proof of veteran status for the designation is the DD-214 or equivalent discharge document. Because the designation is applied to the card, the practical cost is whatever the underlying transaction costs, so adding it at a scheduled renewal is cheapest. There is no disability rating requirement. The designation is accepted by many Wyoming businesses as proof of veteran status, and it spares a veteran from carrying a DD-214 in a wallet. Apply at a WYDOT driver services office. A veteran who cannot find their discharge document should contact the Wyoming Veterans Commission before anything else. The Commission holds and can help obtain military records, and the DD-214 is the key to the property tax exemption, the tuition benefit, the cemetery, the veterans home, the plates, and the licenses alike. In a state with a small population and a single veterans commission, that office is unusually accessible compared with the county-by-county structures larger states use.
