Wyoming County Burial Assistance for Indigent Veterans
Counties provide up to $500 toward preparation and transportation of the body and up to $1,500 toward burial for a veteran without the means to pay. It is small, and it is the difference between a burial and none.
Also called: burial assistance, indigent, county, $500, $1,500, funeral, transportation.
Wyoming counties provide burial assistance for a veteran who dies without adequate means: up to $500 for preparation and transportation of the body, and up to $1,500 toward the burial itself.
These figures are small measured against what a funeral costs. Stating that plainly is more useful than presenting the program as generous. What it does is close the gap between a veteran being buried and a family being unable to arrange it at all, and for the families who need it that is the whole of its value.
The assistance is means-tested and administered at the county level, so the process differs by county and the county clerk or the county veterans service officer is the place to start.
It stacks with rather than replaces other benefits. The Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery provides the plot and vault at no cost, so county assistance covers the preparation, transportation, and funeral costs the cemetery does not. VA also pays a burial allowance and a plot allowance to an eligible survivor, at rates set federally, and a service-connected death carries a substantially higher allowance. A family in difficulty should claim all three rather than stopping at the first.
There is no disability rating requirement, and the test is the estate's inability to pay rather than anything about the veteran's service beyond eligibility as a veteran.
Contact the county clerk or a county veterans service officer promptly, because burial decisions are made quickly and reimbursement rules generally require the claim to be connected to the arrangements rather than made long afterwards.

The gates are veteran status and a lack of adequate means to cover the burial. No disability rating is involved, so the rating filter never hides this benefit.
