Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

West Virginia State Parks run a standing discount called the Veterans' Salute. Veterans and active duty military personnel receive ten percent off all standard lodge rooms, cabins, and campsites operated by West Virginia State Parks, year-round. The things to note are what is absent. There is no disability rating requirement, no residency requirement, and no wartime service requirement. Any veteran, from any state, with proof of service, gets the rate. That makes this one of the few West Virginia veteran benefits with no eligibility test beyond having served, and it is worth knowing for a veteran who does not qualify for anything else in this catalog. Proof of service at check-in is what the parks ask for. This is the practical argument for putting the veteran designation on your driver's license, which West Virginia adds for free and which turns proof of service into showing the card in your wallet. That designation has its own entry. The Department of Veterans Assistance notes that additional discounts and offers for veterans and military members appear seasonally, so the ten percent is a floor rather than the whole of it. Published descriptions have also carried a fifteen percent discount on greens fees at the Pipestem, Twin Falls, and Cacapon resort golf courses on presentation of a valid military identification card, and have noted that Stonewall Resort, which is operated differently from the rest of the system, is excluded from the lodging discount. Those terms move with the season and with the operator, so confirm the current offer with the individual park when booking rather than relying on any published figure, this one included. Book through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system or by calling the park. Two adjacent facts round out recreation in the state for a veteran. Free hunting, trapping, and fishing is a separate and much larger benefit for a veteran at one hundred percent permanent and total, for a former prisoner of war, and for a veteran with a Department of Veterans Affairs vehicle grant, and it removes the license requirement rather than discounting it. And residents on active duty may hunt, trap, or fish without a license while on leave, carrying their leave papers. Both are covered in this catalog under the hunting and fishing entry.
