Whitman County Assessor: the Senior Citizen and Disabled Person Exemption for Veterans Rated 80% or Totally Disabled
Whitman County’s Assessor (509-397-6220) takes the State’s senior citizen and disabled person property tax exemption, which a veteran receiving VA compensation at a combined service-connected rating of 80% or more, or a total disability rating, can claim on a primary residence if household income is within the county’s threshold (the State lowers the rating to 40% for taxes collected from 2027, which the page does not yet say); the Board of Equalization hears appeals of the Assessor’s decision.
Also called: Assessor, senior citizen exemption, disabled person exemption, property tax exemption, 80%, total disability rating, Income Threshold 3, RCW 84.36.381, Board of Equalization, 509-397-6220, Pullman, Colfax, Palouse, Rosalia, Tekoa, Oakesdale, St. John, Colton, Uniontown, Albion, Garfield, Endicott, LaCrosse, Farmington, Lamont, Malden.
The county's page (marked "copied from dor.wa.gov"). The programme is for taxpayers who meet one of these as of December 31 of the year before the taxes are due: "At least 61 years of age or older"; "Retired from regular gainful employment due to a disability"; or "Veteran of the armed forces of the United States receiving compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs at one of the following: Combined service-connected evaluation rating of 80% or higher. Total disability rating for a service-connected disability without regard to evaluation percent." "The qualifying applicant receives a reduction in the amount of property taxes due. The amount of the reduction is based on the applicant's income, the value of the residence, and the local levy rates." The owner must own and occupy a primary residence in Washington with combined disposable income of Income Threshold 3 or less, based on the county median household income. "Disabled person must provide written acknowledgment by Social Security or Veterans Administration or Proof of Disability Affidavit." Renewal is required at least once every six years. The appeal. The page sits with the Board of Equalization's pages and links its Senior Citizen/Disabled Person Exemption appeal form. The exemption itself is the State's (RCW 84.36.379 to 84.36.389; the Washington entries), and RCW 84.36.381 now sets a combined rating of 40% or more for taxes collected from 2027 (80% for 2026 collections); the county's page still gives 80%.
