The fund. Washington County's budget carries fund 1900, Soldiers/Sailors, with one activity, Veteran's Aid, and one line, Provisions & Clothing - Client Services: $3,000.00 spent in 2024-2025, $3,800.00 in 2025-2026, and $4,044.00 budgeted for 2026-2027. It levies no property tax; the money comes by transfer from the county's inheritance tax fund ($3,000.00 in 2025-2026, $4,000.00 budgeted for 2026-2027), and the fund held $43.96 on July 1, 2026. The claims of May 13, 2026 show the year's $3,800.00 paid to the veterans service officer, "LAUTRUP E Soldiers/Sailors", and $3,000.00 transferred in from the inheritance fund the same day; no record shows how the office pays it out. Who qualifies. Section 80-102 lets the county veterans service committee aid a veteran, a spouse, a surviving spouse or a minor child in need. Since LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) the veteran need only have served, been discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions) or died in service, and lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county; there is no wartime test. Apply through the Veterans Service Office, (402) 426-6838. See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
